The House yesterday overwhelmingly rejected a bill to require hospitals to identify illegal aliens before the federal government would reimburse the hospitals for their care.

It was a severe defeat for immigration-control advocates, with just 86 Republicans and two Democrats voting for the measure and 331 members voting against it, including the House Republican and Democratic leadership. And the loss followed a harsh debate that included charges from one side of immigrant-bashing and from the other side of ignoring the needs of legal residents.

But Rep. Dana Rohrabacher, California Republican and sponsor of the bill, said the government has an obligation to U.S. citizens and legal residents before taking care of illegal aliens.

Give this man a cigar! Is he the only one left who cares about us?

Amazing! Polls consistently show a large majority of Americans want illegal immigration controlled, yet our elected leaders continually thwart the will of the people. Again, amazing!

True, but in polls asking Americans what the most important issue facing the country is, illegal immigration is chosen by around 2% of respondants. It's a little higher when Republican voters are broken out ... but not much. It just isn't a resonating issue with most of America. That's a shame, because it's not just young Mexican men and indigent families looking for day labor and welfare entitlements who are sneaking accross that border. It's our mortal terrorist enemies coming over too.

And not to sound too much like a left wing nut here...but there are a number of business interests *very* interested in keeping the flow of illegals open.

The immigration issue, much like say spending cuts, has a broad level of support that isn't very deep. On the other side of things the number of people wanting to *not* get serious about it is quite small - but very focused on the issue, very connected, and has the media's ear.

The proposal...would have told hospitals to send non-emergency patients to their home nation for treatment.
Most medical, hospital and business groups that weighed in on the bill opposed it vehemently, as did Hispanic Republican and Democratic members of the House. They said it would turn hospital workers into immigration police, and said it could become a public health crisis by encouraging illegal aliens not to seek medical attention.
"Let us not jeopardize our entire public health system in this misguided attempt to bring down health care costs and deport undocumented workers," said Rep. Linda T. Sanchez, California Democrat.

"undocumented workers" read lawbreaking aliens.
They are a little off here, they are not encouraging illegal aliens not to seek medical attention they are asking hospitals to send non-emergency patients to their home nation (where they are citizens, not criminal infiltrators causing our hospitals to go in the red) for treatment.
One would almost think they come here for free health care.
BTW, didn't the Sanchez Sisters go by their Anglo names before they realized it was better to be of "hispanic" decent rather than Anglo?
Bob Dornan was the recipient of the results of this changing of ethnicity IIRC.

"With [this] bill, we continue to see elements of the xenophobic base of the Republican Party," said House Democratic Caucus Chairman Robert Menendez, New Jersey Democrat.

This comment coming from a Latino, who are probably the most xenophobic people on this planet. Has anybody spotted any multi-culturalism in Mexico?

But it shouldn't need to be the "top issue" with the American sheeple/

Congress needs to do what is RIGHT..and they are not doing it. They vote what is best for their lawyer cash flow..which is also what is best for their lawyer friends who are not in government. The more complex things are, the better to keep them in business.

Depressing. And not much fanfare being given this vote.
