U.S. Walks Out as Sudan Elected to U.N. Rights Body

UNITED NATIONS (Reuters) - Sudan won an uncontested election on Tuesday to the United Nations' main human rights watchdog, prompting the United States to walk out because of alleged ethnic cleansing in the country's Darfur region.

Sudan's delegate immediately shot back that the U.S. delegation was "shedding crocodile tears" and turning a blind eye to atrocities committed by U.S. soldiers in Iraq against civilians as well as against prisoners.

Fourteen vacant seats were filled on Tuesday for the 53-nation U.N. Human Rights Commission based in Geneva. Many were decided by regional groups before Tuesday's voting in the Economic and Social Council in New York.

Hoorah. That was the right thing to do. Now we should withdraw from the UN altogether and stop funding this criminal organization.

Glad our delegate walked out. And how the Sudanese delegate can compare a few stripped Iraqi prisoners to wholesale genocide is stunning.

Don't you just love that? A government that condones human rights abuses chastises a government that does not because of the actions of a few soldiers...

We should head for the door, keep right on walking and tell the UN they have 6 months to vacate.

Even more pathetic is that half of this country sees the U.N. not only as legitimate, but deserving of greater power over the sovereignty of the United States.

I don't think the U.S. delegates should have walked out. I think they should have got up and said. "That's it! All of you! Get out!"

I see a great future for UN headquarters as public housing...

This is one of the many reasons I look forward to a second Bush/Cheney term. They want to do something about the UN.

"alleged ethnic cleansing [in The Sudan] . . . turning a blind eye to atrocities committed by the U.S. . . ."

Notice how the ethnic cleansing (hundreds of thousands of deaths in The Sudan, well-documented by human rights organizations), are called "alleged", whereas the claim of American "atrocities" is accepted at face value.

Hang on....we want them where we can arrest them once the perfidy and corruption of the "Oil for Food" program is exposed.

The US should invade Sudan, and ethnically cleanse it from the worthless Moslem Arabs. The bastards have been doing that for twelve years, and two million dead Christians.

Countries such as Sudan should never have even had a voice in the UN, not to mention a place on the human rights body.

The sooner we are out of this thing, the better.

Good. Walk out completely and then tell them to take the UN and station it in Europe for while. Get the heck (and it) out.
