Conservative columnist Coulter to speak at Penn State

By Gwenn Miller

Controversial conservative Ann Coulter will speak at Penn State next week to address "Liberal Lies About the American Right."

Coulter, a syndicated political columnist with a right-wing stance, has written such best-sellers as "Treason: Liberal Treachery from the Cold War to the War on Terrorism" and "High Crimes and Misdemeanors: The Case Against Bill Clinton."

She makes frequent television appearances on "Crossfire," "The O'Reilly Factor," and "Hannity and Colmes."

The speech will be at 8 p.m. Thursday in 100 Thomas Building. It is free and open to the public.

It is unlikely that people will be swayed by Coulter's speech and form new opinions, said Toby Eberhart, chairman of Penn State Young Americans for Freedom, the campus group that is presenting the speech.

But they should hear her message, he said, if just to clarify their own opinions and strengthen their own thinking.

"You can put any kind of spin on what anybody says, no matter what side of the political spectrum they're on," Eberhart said.

"Unfortunately, a lot of people don't invest the time to read up on (Coulter) and stereotype her without investigating."

Jessica Hopkins, president of the College Democrats, said she will tell her organization that Coulter will be speaking, and each member can decide whether to attend.

She expects some of the club's members will attend out of "morbid curiosity" and report back to the organization at its next meeting.

But the group will have no formal presence at Coulter's speech, Hopkins said.

"She's not even worth a protest," she said.

Nomi Deutch, co-president of Republican Students of Penn State, said in an e-mail that she recommends that anyone who disagrees with Coulter attend the speech and "respectfully" ask questions afterward.

"This is a great opportunity for those who disagree with her to engage her in a civil and public discussion," Deutch said. "While Ms. Coulter often uses fiery rhetoric that I do not always agree with, she still has the right to come speak on campus."

Coulter's rhetoric has led to controversy in Centre County before, when it prompted former Centre Daily Times Executive Editor Bob Unger to "fire" her in 2002.

Unger canceled her syndicated Friday column after a particular column said liberals were "no good" and labeled the Kennedy family as a group of "heroin addicts, convicted killers, cheaters, bootleggers and dissolute drunks."

I have to miss it because of work related travel. But others around Centre County may want to attend.

I am 100% certain no Democrat will show up and listen. If they do show up, it will be to disrupt. Liberals are the most closed-minded people there are.

Unger said "What Coulter said is a lie. Not ALL of them have been convicted."

I don't ever remember Ann appearing with O'Reilly. His ego is too big to share the stage with someone who would steal the show!

The title of your article, "Conservative columnist Coulter to speak at Penn State" begs the question, "Do you identify all of your speakers this way?"

By that I mean, do you identify other speakers as "Liberal", "Communist", "Left-Wing", "Ex-Felon", etc., or do you reserve the labels for conservatives only?

I would think, "Columnist Ann Coulter to speak at Penn State" or "Best-Selling Author Ann Coulter to speak at Penn State" would suffice to describe Ms. Coulter, yes?

I'll be watching.

Thank you for writing. Is there anything wrong with calling Ann Coulter conservative? She does, in fact, call herself conservative, correct? I believe she is quite proud of being a conservative. Therefore, the headline is accurate.

And for the record, I do not write headlines. I write the stories, and copy editors write headlines.

Thanks again for writing and have a great day! And I am so happy that you'll be "watching."

I don't ever remember Ann appearing with O'Reilly.

She appeared right after Treason came out. She cleaned his clock. O'Reilly looked real bad.

I would like to know if she is ever schedules to speak at any of the colleges or universities in Indiana. I would gladly volunteer my services as a bodyguard.

(Actually, I'm just looking for an excuse to go toe-to-toe against the radical filth infesting our institutions of higher education. Heh heh heh)

[ I don't ever remember Ann appearing with O'Reilly. His ego is too big to share the stage with someone who would steal the show! ]

O'Reilly accused Joseph McCarthy of being on the House Anti-American Activitys Commision. Coulter reminded him the McCarthy was a SENATOR.. Too delicious for words. O'Reilly looked like a deer in headlights as fumferred and changed the subject. Coulters book "Treason" should be re-read as democrats are so busy now days proveing her book was an understatement.

""She's not even worth a protest," she said."

Translation: 'I can't find enough people to stage one.'
