Colombian terrorists had trained fanatical youths to launch suicide bomb attacks to assassinate the country's president, the secret police claimed yesterday after the arrest of a guerrilla leader.
Luis Hipolito Ospina, a devout Muslim and member of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia, or Farc, known as "The Muslim", was accused of creating a squad of 22 suicide bombers aged between 12 and 25.
Although often used by Muslim extremists, suicide attacks are not a common tactic of other terrorist groups.
"This guerrilla set up an indoctrination programme for young people," said Jorge Noguera, the head of Colombia's secret police, the DAS. "The ultimate aim of this suicide squad was to murder President Alvaro Uribe."
Police first learned of the squad in February last year, after Farc placed a car bomb in a Bogota club, killing 37 people and injuring 160.
But hard evidence about the squad was not obtained until last week, when the army arrested a young man known as "Heriberto". The 19-year-old admitted that he had been sent on a suicide mission to blow up the secret police headquarters in a provincial capital, Florencia, but had lost his nerve.
"I felt bad and very scared," Heriberto told his interrogators. "I was to put on a waistcoat with explosives and blow myself up once inside the battalion HQ."

I'm more and more impressed by the persistence and intellegence of the associated elements' work. I'm reckoning that the Wahhabs figure that if they can get enough people blowed up real good, they can tip the political scene radically leftward (a la Spain), open up the narco traffic, offer it protection, destroy more Amaricans with coke, and use the profit to finance Wahhab adventures in Chechnya, Serbia, etc.
Oh yeah...provide steady employment in the coca fields for the poor workers. (that's what's in it for the socialists) I mean REAL steady employment...like if you call in sick, you die.
Genius!

BTTT!
In the early 1990s, after the Colombians of more useful crops (crops other than illegal drugs) had cried for years for us to send the Army to help them, some of our little buddies went down there and cleaned up. They cut the cocaine supply to the USA by one-third for awhile.
Yep. The war on drugs is worth it. We need to finish it, and we have all the more reason now. If the more decent Colombians and their Government want the help, we should send enough to mop up.
BTW, there was also some word from TV news in the '90s that some of the FARC creeps had actually purchased a Russian sub and were assembling it there when it was captured.
And as for all the drugged-up hippies screaming from our Pacific Northwest and New England? We should pass some tough fed legislation and go after that, concentrating efforts in those particular areas, too. One result would likely be that we would see better haircuts and less socialism disguised as liberaltarianism in those areas.

The sad thing is that this is not unusual over there.
Los guerrilleros have tried to whack President Uribe for quite a while, and ergo, this is nothing out of the ordinary in my beloved home country!!!
(off-topic)Some girl I'm now head over heels for now lives and attends college in Pamplona, which is in the interior, far from the Caribbean peace (the Colombian Caribbean region is not as violent as the rest of Colombia).
I dream of bringing her here for Christmas.(/off-topic)
