The 9/11 hijackers were armed only with utility knives. A razor sharp utility knife can easily cut someone's throat.

CAN, against an unsuspecting victim who is unarmed, unprepared, and untrained. Police are properly trained to manage ANY situation, including distraught fools with 1" blades... and that training does NOT include "shoot to kill".

See my reply #53 above. And, yes, the police are specifically taight to shoot to kill. The logic is that by the time you have to fire your weapon, the situation is life threatening and it is better to kill the perp quickly than take a chance on wounding him where he can continue to return fire..

I know there are idiots on police departments, we have some. A few but I suppose a few is enough.

After seeing guys go through everything that happens after a shooting, I sure don't want to be involved in one. Goes through the Grand Jury, big investigation, time off, then living with it afterward. Not to mention the family of the person you shot.

I didn't think about that part. There is probably nothing you could say to the family that would justify shooting their loved one. Even if there loved ones shot first. I really do feel for those guys.

We have two guys involved in two seperate recent shootings. One was a mental call. Two cops got there and the guy had a knife. He stabbed one of the cops and the other cop shot him in the chest, killing him. This happened right in front of the dead mans family. They had called the police because they couldn't control him any longer.

Initially the father of the deceased said the police did what they had to do. I guess grief got the better part of him and now he's suing. The cop that did the shooting is one of the nicest guys on the dept., very laid back. He really has suffered after the shooting, though he was cleared and the shooting was legitimate.

I'll bet! No one I know want to shoot much less kill someone. I've got a couple of friends who are detectives in the MPD. We go shooting from time to time together. They say that what they fear most is having to actually shoot someone.
