Its like the states own you and no matter where you go you owe them. I'm surprised they don't tax you after you move out of the state - you are my little tax slave for life no matter where you are.

That actually happened to me once. I got a tax bill for a car that I owned from the state where I moved from -- 3 years after I moved. I politely sent a gas company receipt and a nice note to 'stick it.'

Sometime in the mid '90s, California was attempting to tax the retirement pay of military people who had been stationed in California during their career, no matter where they were currently living. For example, I have 22 years of service. 7 of those years I was stationed in CA. CA stated they had the right to tax the portion of my retirement pay earned in CA. No matter that I had no choice in being there, that I never made the slightest effort to become a CA citizen, I voted and regestered my car in my home state, etc.

They lost in court but it was scary they thought they could do that.
