Robbers Take $3.2M From London Airport
Sat Feb 7, 6:52 PM ET
LONDON - Robbers handcuffed 15 workers at a cargo shed on the grounds of London's Heathrow Airport and stole some $3.2 million in British pound notes, police said Saturday.
The Friday night raid, which netted 1.75 million British pounds, is the latest in a string of heists at the airport in recent years.
Police said they arrested five men in or near the capital Saturday in connection with the robbery and were seeking three other suspects.
Six men armed with handguns entered the Menzies World Cargo depot just after 11 p.m. Friday, London's Metropolitan Police said.
The robbers restrained about 15 employees in the shed with plastic handcuffs, and three of the workers suffered minor injuries, police said.
They fired at one worker who tried to escape, but missed, and the gun went off again as one of the thieves struggled with the man and brought him back inside, officers said.
The thieves took several bags of bank notes, then hijacked a van and fled, police said.
In March 2002, five men were convicted for stealing about $3 million that had just come off a South African Airways flight at Heathrow. A month earlier, two men robbed a van at the airport of $6.5 million.
Also there was an incident I heard of on the New York news where someone on a plane realized they had accidentally took a boxcutter on board and turned it in. This may have happened previously, but this was a new incident of this I think Friday.
The metal detectors don't work.
Somehow didn't work 9/11, and aren't working consistently now.
Any officials looking into this to try to improve the system?
