January 31, 2004 -- ATLANTA - Former President Jimmy Carter yesterday blasted a top Georgia education official's bid to strip the word "evolution" from textbooks in some of the state's public schools. Kathy Cox, Georgia's school superintendent, has come under fire for suggesting that science books used in the state's middle and high schools carry the term "biological changes over time" instead of "evolution."

Carter served as Georgia's governor from 1971-1975 and has often spoken of being a born-again Christian.

For some reason, I found this a curious way to phrase it.

Somehow, I don't think Reuters would point this out, normally. Weird turn of phrase, isn't it?

It's pretty odd yes, as if they're saying, if this guy is a born again christian then why is he sticking up for evolution?

Jimmy, always fretting about what other people will think of him. What a terrible way to live.

I don't believe it. I actually agree with Jimmah the Fearless Rabbit Killer on something.

C'mon Newt, speak up on this! Conservatism still needs you!

There are already two earlier threads on this subject in the last few days, but this new thread, with Jimmy Boy's input, is a worthy addition:
Georgia may shun 'evolution' in schools.
Georgia Takes on 'Evolution'.

Carter said he was embarrassed by Cox's proposal . . .

Not half as embarrassed as most Americans are of Carter's presidency.

I got his Revolutionary War novel The Hornet's Nest as a Christmas present. I was throughly prepared to believe him a better novelist than he was a President, but thus far he has surprised me. He may have been a better President than he is a novelist.

I fear that a good number of conservative Republican politicians may believe in creationism. I'm sure Ashcroft does, for example.

Unfortunately, a lot of Republican politicians are too chicken$hit to speak out against the creationuts, because they think they'll alienate their conservative base. What they don;t realize is that they only alienate both swing voters AND members of their conservative base who insist on teaching their children the truth. Worse yet, it makes the Rats look intelligent when they counter them by supporting evolution. Your average lib is no more scientifically literate than any other schlub, but will oppose creationism only because "conservatives" support it.

Why do they want to ban the phrase "biological change over time?"

Weird.

It's embarrassing.

These people should join the modern world.
