The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences has awarded the 2004 Crafoord Prize to Eugene Butcher of Stanford University in California and Timothy Springer of Harvard Medical School in Massachusetts.
Theyve been honored for their studies of the migration of white blood cells, which the academy says play an important role in inflammation and healing.
The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences also awards the Nobel science prizes. The Crafoord Prize was created to reward work in fields that did not exist at the time of Alfred Nobel, and rotates every year between biological sciences, astronomy, geology, and mathematics.
The two Americans will receive their awards here on September 22, a couple of weeks before the announcement of this years Nobel Prizes.
