Follwing is a copy of an e-mail sent today by me to Paul Krugman:
Dear Mr. Krugman,
Regarding your column of January 23, 2004, I wanted to point out a contradiction between one of your statements and one made in another article appearing in the same issue. Specifically, you stated:
Some conspiracys are real: as yesterdays Boston Globe reports: Republican staff members of the U.S. Senate Judiciary infiltrated opposition computer files for a year monitoring secret strategy memos and periodically passing them to reporters.
However, the article appearing on page A12 titled Senate Inquiry Into Memos That Went Astray Nears End has a different take on the event. Quoting from the article, we find:
Miranda, a former Republican Judiciary Committee Staff Member, whose name appeared as a recipient of one of the Democratic e-mail messages,
Further we read:
A junior member of the staff of Republican Orin Hatch discovered a flaw in the computer system that allowed him to read some of the computer traffic
Lastly, we discover:
I knew our people had told them about it. Mr. Miranda said. Once I knew that, I had no further obligation.
So instead of the evil conspiracy that you and the Globe put forward, the New York Times article by Neal Lewis tells us that the Democrats sent info to the Republicans via e-mail and a flaw in the system then allowed the Republicans access the Democrats e-mail system. Further, on being informed of the flaw, the Democrats failed to correct it.
I know that you are a strong minded individual who is as open minded as I am and therefore you seek nothing but the truth. I trust that now that the false conclusion drawn by you and others will be corrected.
