[history]
A late surge by Democratic presidential candidates John Kerry and John Edwards has pushed them slightly ahead of long-standing front-runners Howard Dean and Dick Gephardt in the race to win Monday's Iowa caucuses, a new Des Moines Register poll shows.

What the trend in Iowa means that some Democrats have woken up and have realized that nominating Howard Dean would be suicide. It is not a "win" for Kerry -- people are backing Kerry and Edwards because they are not Dean.
I will say that this will probably put an end to Gephardt's campaign.
But the importance of the Iowa caucus is overblow, IMO. Look at past winners -- Gephart in '88, GHW Bush in '80, Harken in '92. The tendency of Iowa voters has never been a reflection on the actual preferences of the rest of the nation.

I'm really tired tonight.
Who the h*ll cares who wins Iowa? I don't.
There's not one Demoncrat, with the exception of Al Sharpton, who interests me and none have the appeal to replace W.

I cannot pinpoint what I like about Edwards, but he makes pretty good sense." He's got really good hair, Alicia, honey.

Those little Deanie Boppers are gonna loose this caucus and they're gonna be pissed. There will be some who will continue on with the "Anyone But Bush" strategy, but there are going to be many who will be too angry at Kerry and Clark to support them.
I'd like Mean Dean to win Iowa - but then loose NH, but the fireworks after Iowa ought to be interesting to watch

Poll participant Alicia Carriquiry, associate provost and professor of statistics at Iowa State University, said she might wait until Monday night before she makes up her mind. "I have two or three favorites: Kerry, Edwards and Dean," said Carriquiry, 46. "I like Dean's position on the war. I like Kerry's position on taxes and the economy. I cannot pinpoint what I like about Edwards, but he makes pretty good sense."
Bet I can figure out what she likes about Johnny boy. The arousal gap is alive and well.

LOL, these people suddenly think Kerry is electable? All we have to do is drag out a film clip of his flip flops and the ten thousand differing stances he's taken during this primary to sink his ship.
I think the "establishment" has decided that Kerry, with Edwards as his running mate (to lock up the southern states) is their best chance. Except for the fact that Edwards is unlikely to be able to bring even his own state with him, and Kerry is far and away too liberal for any southern voter.
Frankly, we're going to have to do some serious GOTV whoever is nominated. I want a landslide.

What's important is the spin of the results. Who over-achieved? Who under-achieved?
With the polls being so mixed up right before Monday, which guy is going to be perceived as the frontrunner or the underdog or the late comer?
It will be more interesting to see how the media interprets the results than to see the results themselves - will there be differing interpretations, or will they pick up on a common story?
This isn't the only time that has been true, but with no apparent favorite, I think the media will play an even larger role than normal in shaping things.

The final poll is about to be cast and all this speculation can end as far as IA is concerned......

Three professors, a dairy farmer and a guy who works at a dump. Not to take away from dairy farmers or sanitation engineers, but is this really an appropriate sample for Iowa?
