Actress Gwyneth Paltrow is ruling out the prospect of returning to America to raise her child - because she deems her homeland too dangerous. The Oscar winning beauty - who is pregnant with her husband Chris Martin 's baby - has been living in London since settling down with the Coldplay star, and she has no intention of bringing up their child in a threatening environment. She says, "I worry about brining up a child in America. At the moment there's a weird, over-patriotic atmosphere over there, like, 'We're number one and the rest of the world doesn't matter.' And the guns in school - it's not great."

"No,the rest of the world does NOT envy you,or want to be American. There are other great countries out there, where the people are quite happy to be Scots,English,Australian etc......America isnt the be-all and end-all you know."
I notice all your examples are places that are (or were) part of the British Empire-- and I approve.
Actually, we are all part of one great "be-all and end-all that includes Scotland, England, Wales, both of the Irelands, Australia, the US, Canada, New Zealand (a little left these days, but they have to be counted). And so many other places (islands, mainly) that at one time had some close involvement with Great Britain. No human being or country is perfect, but the British, in general, left a magnificent legacy of freedom-loving people. We can recognize the petty corruption or tyranny that existed from time to time in one place or another, as well as some mistakes made in the course of dismantling it empire, but overall the British Empire was a force for good.
I think that a lot of our appreciation for the rights of the individual comes from our British heritage. British subjects were subject to gov't impositions (some reasonable and some unreasonable), but never willingly yielded all power to the State in the same way that the French and Germans so often did.

Ex- but will pressed into tourist guide servitude perhaps this year... Ja he's from Pretoria and he said you couldn't help but know Charlize (her father was pretty abusive). SA is a beautiful country and you should go but go with someone.

Another Hollyweirder leaving for Britain. She and Madonna are friends so they obviously think alike.Madonna did her best to debase and trash our poplar culture before she split for Britain. Gwynneth Paltrow did no such thing. I'm not a fan of hers but I liked the cute movie she did with Huey Lewis and the duet they sang, "Cruising Together"

On the other hand, there are very nearly as many Cubans, Mexicans, Peruvians and Salvadorans, and whether or not they envy us, they sho'nuf' wanna' be here!
Maybe we could send some to UK.

Yeah, I can name a few that I just cringe every time they open their mouths for fear something will come out that will preclude my ever enjoying them again. I really like the first Matrix movie so I just live in dread of Keanu saying something stoopid. And it's Keanu, so you know it's only a matter of time. Tick, tick, tick....

For myself, I don't want you to envy us, love us, or even like us. Just don't try to DESTROY us. I'd settle for that. Really.

LOL....
If only these celebrities wouldn't insist on biting the hands that feed them. I'm not saying they don't have a right to their opinion, but to speak out against your country in such a vicious way? I guess nothing is considered treasonous anymore.

Well, Keanu's Canadian, so maybe he'll think, "Gee this isn't my country so maybe I'd better keep my trap shut." Here's hoping. As for the rest of them, they make me long for the days when the court jester could be beheaded the minute he bored the king.
