Jewish group endorses same-sex marriage (liberal religious voices to counter the strong opposition)

BOSTON, Jan. 16 (UPI) -- The major public policy voice of the Jewish community in greater Boston has voted overwhelmingly to back same-sex marriage.

The endorsement by the Jewish Community Relations Council, an umbrella organization representing 42 Jewish groups, is part of a growing effort by liberal religious voices to counter the strong opposition to same-sex marriage voiced by the state's Catholic bishops, the Boston Globe said Friday.

The bishops of the state's four Catholic dioceses planned to announce a major campaign to defeat same-sex marriage Friday.

Several Jewish organizations had already endorsed same-sex marriage, including the largest Jewish denomination in the country, the Union for Reform Judaism. But, same-sex marriage is opposed by leaders of Orthodox Judaism, a small minority of greater Boston's 250,000-member Jewish community.

Same-sex marriage has become a hotly contested issue in Massachusetts because of a ruling by the state Supreme Judicial Court in November declaring that barring two people of the same sex from marrying violates the state constitution.

U.S. Jews remain solidly Democratic, although support for President Bush has increased.

Those results come from a new survey, which also shows sharp drops in Jewish support for issues dear to the Republican president -- including the war on terrorism and the Iraq conflict.

The findings are part of the American Jewish Committee's annual survey of American Jewry.

The survey shows a sharp rise in concern about anti-Semitism in Europe; an increase in concern about anti-Semitism in America; strong support for keeping the words "under God" in the Pledge of Allegiance; strong support for a multilateral U.S. foreign policy; and a small rise in support for the establishment of a Palestinian state......"

Is this the opinion of the majority of the rebs, or of the actual members of the congregations?

Jewish "community groups" are not in any sense denominations. There are no congregations. Think of it as a political club for persons of Jewish ancestry.

Reform Judaism is a liberal denomination, but congregations are autonomous, as with more traditional Jews also.

Nothing quite like what's going on with ECUSA can happen, because of there is no central authority and no property issues. The advancing of "gay" ideas among Jews mus follow a completely different strategy, though the goal is about the same.

Only if you're a secular jew, it would appear. The number of secular jews that engage in homosexual acts seems to be disproportinate to their population. It may be that they are so ugly that they must marry their own (gender). Not that they is anything wrong with that...

Not withstanding the beauty of your posts, I have only anectdotal information on which to base my claims regrading secular Jews. And I believe my post suggested homosexuals are, for the most part homely, and, if the secular Jew fits, so be it.

Let's do the time warp again. I believe it was you that stated there was illogic in my statement. Did I say all homosexual, secular Jews were ugly? No. Did I say the ones I've seen are?

Even if we assume that neither of your (admittedly anecdotally derived) premises is false, your conclusion bears no resemblance to reality, i.e., all men prefer beauty.

As for your comment's implications regarding all Jews:

Because you state that the homosexual secular subgroup of Jews is disproportionately large and disproportionately ugly, unless the balance of Jews are disproportionately plain or disproportionately beautiful or disproportionately some combination of the two, it follows from your comment that Jews are disproportionately ugly, (which, BTW, runs contrary to my experience growing up as a Jew).
