Terrorist threats to destroy US city posted on internet
UK Herald ^ | Jan. 15, 2004 | IAN BRUCE

US and British intelligence services are investigating a series of alleged al Qaeda internet warnings predicting a terror attack which would "destroy an entire American city".

The messages, posted on a number of Islamic websites over the last week, say the countdown to attack has already begun.

They claimed it would be "an even stronger strike than nuclear weapons".

They also warn that unless the US and its allies withdraw immediately from Iraq, Afghanistan, and all other Muslim countries, the terror network has ordered the elimination of American leaders and their supporters. The post of most concern to Western intelligence has appeared three times in three days on a radical Islamic internet forum called the Mujahideen Network.

It claimed to be "from the Islamic nation to the American people" and boasted that its forces now had the ability to wipe out an entire city.

A security source said last night: "There is no way of determining whether these warnings are genuine or wishful thinking on the part of extremists. "But there are disturbing parallels with the background threat-level chatter which preceded the September 11 attacks in 2001."

The investigation came as the UN said almost 100 countries should be "named and shamed" for failing to enforce international sanctions against known members of al Qaeda and its Taliban allies and to block the flow of money and arms to the groups.

Well, what some of you found and we have been discussing for some time at the on-going "terrorist inforand analysis" thread, finally made it to the main media.

For those unfamiliar with it, the highly informative and interesting on going thread is here:

are they implying a nuclear WMD? in the 1960's U-2 carried air sampling equipment to "sniff out" the various metals used in detonations ... even high in the atmosphere ...

the country of origin would likely be known ... after the fact of course ... crazy Islamikazis are trying to start World War III ...

We're dealing with TWO threats at the same time -- Muslim extremists and illegal immigration. You make a dangerous mistake if you don't realize the gravity of both.

Err, pointless waste of time thread.

The UK Herald is basically a tabloid, btw. A lot of British stuff gets posted here without people understanding the source.

I cannot describe the enormity of yawns that I produce everytime I read an AQ Web threat story. They've supposedly been about to destroy 3 cities in the US in the next month for the past six months.

"Asia for the Asiatics!"
"This is my last territorial demand!"

It didn't work for the fascists in the previous century, and it won't work in this one, either.

And here is another report about the terrorist threats:

http://www.emergency.com/ennday.htm

Warning to American People Re-issued By Alleged Militants

WASHINGTON, DC: The "Third Warning" to the American people and the media was reposted on a number of jihad forums commonly used for communication to the Islamic fundamentalists interested in advancing terrorist activities. The reposting of this warning in conjunction with the latest release of the audiotape of Osama bin Laden, and specific references to portions of the 8th issue of the "Voice of Jihad" magazine appear to indicate a reinforcement of planned terror operations.

ERRI counter-terrorism analysts continue to examine the possibility that the "Voice of Jihad" messages are part of what appears to be a blizzard of misdirection and propaganda messages...or are they an actual "call to arms" being sent by Al-Qaeda-connected personnel?

"Yeah, right, stronger than nukes...sure."

One thing potentially stronger, would be poison gas. Sure there wouldn't be property damage. But multiple large releases around a metropolitan area can kill millions.

I sure as hell hope our leaders have the guts to counter-strike if this ever happens, by targeting every major city of unfriendly arab countries with multiple nukes. 1 billion dead arabs would be about right.

Well, what do you think of the NY Times reporting on the FBI director's statements?

Clearly AQ is still intent on striking the question is not if they try, but when and whether we will be successful in foiling the attack, as we have been so far.

F.B.I. Director Calls Attack Quite Likely
By ERIC LICHTBLAU

http://www.nytimes.com/2004/01/15/national/15FBI.html

Published: January 15, 2004

ASHINGTON, Jan. 14 — The F.B.I. director, Robert S. Mueller III, said on Wednesday that terrorists would "quite probably" strike the United States again and that Al Qaeda remained a major threat despite the lowering of the nation's threat status last week.

"Al Qaeda would very much relish another high-profile attack within the United States in which numerous U.S. citizens would be killed," Mr. Mueller told reporters at a luncheon meeting sponsored by The Christian Science Monitor. "We have disrupted their capability, but there are still persons out there who have that capability."

The sobering assessment echoed comments that he and other officials like Homeland Security Secretary Tom Ridge have made in recent months.

After three weeks of intense concerns about the threat of a hijacked airliner or other terrorist attack, the Bush administration lowered the threat level on Friday to yellow, or "elevated" status.

But, Mr. Mueller said, "We are still in a position where we have substantial concern about an attack from Al Qaeda," based on intelligence from the United States and overseas. "We quite probably will at some point in time have another attack."

Mr. Mueller said he saw reason for optimism because of improved sharing and analysis of intelligence, cooperation from allies and the captures of leading Qaeda figures.

One thing potentially stronger, would be poison gas. Completely 100% wrong.

But multiple large releases around a metropolitan area can kill millions.

Pure, absolute nonsense.

I consider this a VERY sobering threat.

I do NOT feel we are remotely close to being out of the woods yet.

I believe they are quite right about their capabilities within some unknown degree of limitation--probably God's limitation.

But I suspect even God may allow them a measure of such destructiveness to wake our land up--perhaps to wake the world up. We went back to mindless sleep far too much and far too quickly after 911
