Mammotome breast biopsy

Posted on 01/13/2004 3:13:27 AM PST by CDHart

I am trying to post this to the "vanity" topic, so I hope it works! Has anyone out there had any experience with the Mammatome breast biopsy system? I am scheduled to have one on Jan. 30, and everything I've learned so far is encouraging, but I would like info from someone who has actually had it done. Sorry if this ends up in the wrong place.

Carolyn

Mammotome® Breast Biopsy System

A breast biopsy using the Mammotome® system can help a doctor make a highly accurate diagnosis without the need for open breast surgery.

Through the use of computer imaging, a breast abnormality or breast lump can be clearly identified, even in its earliest stages. Digital imaging enables a physician to use the computer-guided Mammotome® probe to gently collect tissue samples through one small 1/4 inch incision.

With the Mammotome® system, a breast biopsy can be performed in an outpatient setting under local anesthesia. A doctor can make a precise analysis with minimal pain, scarring and recovery time. The biopsy procedure takes less than an hour, and patients can return to their normal daily activities immediately."

I don't have any statistics on the accuracy of this test, but it sounds like an easy way to do it.

Good Luck...sw

This sounds wonderful. Wish I'd had this, because a few months ago I had a regular breast biopsy, and it was no picnic, from the needle localization to being out of it for the next 24 hours due to anesthesia to having subsequent pain and scarring. I had absolutely zero fun. But whatever technique your doctor uses, I hope your results are as good as mine were! God bless you.

Thanks to both of you for your input and info. The more I hear about this, the better I like it. Apparently there aren't too many of these machines in use, so I'm glad I go to St. Luke's. They always have the latest equipment, etc.

Hi,

My wife had one of these. No problem found, and she went right back to work afterwards.

Medical progress has been amazing. 25 years ago my mother went to have a surgical biopsy. In those days if they went in and the tumor was malignant, they'd just remove the breast right there and then. You had no choices, no alternative. You went to sleep not knowing if you'd have your breasts when you woke up. When you think about it today, it's astounding. Although I thank God, because they did remove here breasts and she's been cancer free since, I still wonder how her life would have been different if she had the options women have today.

Thanks much! I do feel better now knowing that someone who has had one did well.
