Divers Probed for Giving Fish Champagne

1 hour, 24 minutes ago Add Oddly Enough - Reuters to My Yahoo!

WARSAW (Reuters) - Three Polish divers faced a police investigation Thursday for possible illegal fishing and animal abuse after a news photo showed them plying a freshly caught pike with champagne at an outdoor New Year's party.

Reuters Photo

"They may have committed offences of poaching and maltreating a fish," said Maria Niedziolka of the National Fishing Authority, which notified police of the incident.

The picture in Nowa Trybuna daily showed three frogmen neck-deep in a lake, with one of them tipping a bottle of cheap Russian bubbly into the fish's open mouth.

One of the divers told news agency PAP that they had found the pike half-dead and wanted to "restore it to consciousness by treating it with champagne."

It was not clear whether the fish survived. Police said it would not be needed as evidence in the investigation.

Apparently the Police have too much time on their hands. Good grief! Don't they have something better to do than protect the pike?

POACHED PIKE WITH CHAMPAGNE SAUCE

INGREDIENTS

4 4-ounce fresh or frozen pike fillets
1 medium cucumber
1 teaspoon finely shredded orange peel
1 cup orange juice
1 medium carrot, shredded
1/4 teaspoon salt
1 tablespoon cornstarch
1/2 cup champagne

DIRECTIONS

Thaw pike, if frozen. Rinse pike and pat dry with paper towels. Measure thickness of pike. Set aside.

Chop enough of the cucumber to equal ½ cup. Thinly slice the remaining cucumber; set aside.

In an ungreased 10-inch skillet stir together the orange peel, orange juice, carrot, and salt. Bring the mixture to boiling. Carefully add pike to skillet. Return the mixture just to boiling; reduce heat. Cover and simmer for 4 to 6 minutes per ½-inch thickness of pike or till the pike flakes easily when tested with a fork.

Place cucumber slices on a platter. Use a slotted spatula to transfer pike to platter atop cucumber. Cover with foil to keep warm.

For sauce, in a small bowl stir together the cornstarch and champagne. Stir into the mixture in the skillet. Cook and stir till mixture is thickened and bubbly. Cook and stir for 2 minutes more. Stir in the chopped cucumber. Spoon the sauce over fish.

Makes 4 servings.

Q: What's the difference between meat and fish?

A: If you beat your fish, it dies.
