Uniform policy changes;

Flag displayed permanently

USAREUR News Release

HEIDELBERG, GermanyIn light of USAREUR’s numerous expeditionary operations and in recognition of the Army's commitment to the Global War on Terror, Gen. B. B. Bell, USAREUR commanding general, has deemed it appropriate and proper for all soldiers to “proudly and permanently wear the American Flag on their field/ combat uniform” whether they are in the garrison or deployed in support of an operation.

“The Army is in the process of revising AR 670-1 and I am rescinding my Command Policy Letter #32,” said Bell in a recent message to USAREUR commanders and leaders.

AR 670-1 and CPL #32 specify and reinforce policy on the wearing of the US Flag Patch on the Battle Dress Uniform and Desert Camouflage Uniform.  “These requirements were established at a time when our Army was not committed to war and expeditionary operations / deployments to the extent we are now,” Bell said.

While a new letter is forthcoming to provide the specifics of this new authorization and policy, there are several questions the Army is addressing before it can publish clear guidance.  Once a consensus at DA has been established, implementing instructions will be published.

“Until such time as the instructions are published, I do not want personnel returning from a deployment to remove their US Flag Patch from either the DCUs or BDUs,” said Bell.

I meant to say that with so many people moving back and forth from various deployments it makes no sense to be removing and re-sewing the flag patch multiple times. That's time consuming and it can be unisghtly. Instead, it's makes sense for all soldiers to simply wear the patch at all times.
