Tens of millions of guns in America share design flaws that put their owners and those around them in unnecessary jeopardy, a four-month Detroit News investigation found.

Firearm manufacturers, long aware of the dangers, have made no concerted, industrywide effort to improve safety.

Lawmakers have ensured that no federal agency has the power to set safety standards for firearms manufactured in the United States.

There is one. IT's called the BATF....or F troop.

attempts to impose safety standards for guns.

"Turn em in" is your 'safety standard.

bad decisions by gun handlers

Then DON'T MAKE BAD DECISIONS!!!!!!!!

family friend who was unloading the gun when it discharged

There's rule one.....Never point the gun at something you are not willing to destroy.

There was no easy way to tell the gun was loaded

It's always loaded if you know gun safety, dumbass.

fired even after the magazine — the clip with ammunition — had been removed. Did you forget the one in the chamber?

the safety — the main feature that prevents unintentional discharges — has to be turned off when the gun

The only safety that counts is the one between your ears. Another BASIC gun safety rule.

Many victims experienced with handling firearms

Doesn't always mean they know gun safety. BTW - I've NEVER dropped my gun.

preventing accidents among people with limited knowledge of firearms

No it would not. EDUCATION Would. We can start with RULE 1.

"Then they try to scare the other child by pointing the gun right in his or her face and pulling the trigger. They expect to hear a click, but the gun goes off."

Again, RULE 1

The gun didn’t have a safety to prevent it from firing once the magazine was removed.

Gun Safety 101 - Guns are always loaded.

he pointed the gun at her head and pulled the trigger

I sound like a broken record here, RULE 1

When in fact the barrel chamber may still contain a cartridge and shoot if the trigger is pulled.

No shit. It's been that way as long as I can remember. Standard rule about the 'one in the chamber' in semis.

If you can stomach the rest of this. The rest of the reports are Here

And Lastly, if you follow the rules of gun safety, there shouldn't be a problem. I NEVER point a gun at someone unless it's intentional. I keep my finger OFF the trigger until I'm ready to fire. My gun is ALWAYS loaded(even when there's no ammo in it).

It's that simple.

was moving file cabinets in 1985 at the Meijer store in Royal Oak where he worked when his gun slipped from its holster, hit the floor and fired. The bullet entered under Tunney’s bulletproof vest and exited his neck.
Wearing a bulletproof vest to move cabinets ? Seems odd.
Regarding recalls etc, the Ruger catalog invites those with the relevant old model to send them in for free upgrade.

Internal memos, gun patents and employee depositions show that many of these safety features are cheap, easily installed and have been available for nearly a hundred years.

Stopped reading right here.

Once again, the Detroit News goes off on a RINO tangent. Maybe it's some sort of awards season for newspapers. The spinning, selective use of dubious statistics, and general dishonesty is worthy of the RAT commie-lovin' Detroit Free Press. And there are three more days of front-page "investigative reporting" to go.

About the only good that will come of this is that the News will run short reader comments at a ratio of 50-50 pro/con. On a gun issue, the Free Press would be 20-1 anti-gun, if they allowed even one pro-gun opinion to be printed.

"The Texas farmer suffered brain damage in 1994 after he was shot in the head when a gun given to him as a birthday gift fell from his waistband and discharged... The gun, a replica of the classic Colt cowboy revolver made famous in movie Westerns, was manufactured in the early 1990s by Heritage Arms. The gun maker had good reason to know it was unsafe."

What a moronic statement. It has been well known for over 160 years, since Sam Colt invented the revolver, that you always have the hammer over an empty chamber. You load five in a sixshooter.

Jennings, Bryco, Raven.....all high quality firearms no doubt.

All of my guns have the same safety, its called "gray matter". You don't point it at someone, even in jest. Always index when you are holding it. If you MUST try the trigger pull, make SURE the gun is unloaded, point it in a safe direction...

Gee, I must have missed the tens of millions of accidents/maimings,etc. stories on the news, due to the design flaws.

Ah HA! I knew it! This is the real reason liberals have "issues" with guns and other subjects having to do with freedom.

No ears and nothing to go between them.

Methinks someone forgot to post the CRAPOLA ALERT with this article.

This is just another gun hit piece by a liberal, anti-gun rag. Nothing to see here, except stupid people trying to figure out what the rattling noise inside their heads is.

"We would love to see these guns taken and melted down," said the scumbag trial lawyer. That pretty much sums up the whole gun-grabber position.

I've never bought a revolver. Do they include that advice in the manual for the gun?

Too bad the internet is around otherwise this kind of complete lie might be believed by the most gullible who dont read much...
If you spend anytime on Ruger Forum, Pistolsmith dot com,AR15 ,FAL Files,Sig or Glock Forums or any number of specific gun boards...any safety issues, design flaws, KABOOMs and reasons for are discussed openly...and frankly there arent the numbers there..and the crap in this article is easlily debunked...
By data.facts and stats among America's greatest gunsmiths engineers and designers...simply dont bear out any of this...
It's complete BS -gungrabber BS of the worst magnitude...manureitude

If I'm doing a tactical reload, I want that one round in the chamber to be able to fire if needed.

"At least 9,485 people were killed ? and another 127,000 wounded ? in unintentional shootings from 1993 to 2001."

With all of those shootings, why are all the stories from 10 and 20 years ago and not from last week?

To reduce the chance that our kids will drown, we don't hide the swimming pool and ocean. We teach them to swim. These ninnies want to ignore human nature, childhood curiosity, and common sense and want 'solve the problem' by keeping kids away from guns. We need to demystify guns by teaching kids AND adults about guns and gun safety.

Yes. Every gun manufacturer, Colt, Ruger, etc., includes that advice in the instruction manuals provided with new revolvers. The advice is often printed in large letters right on the box.
