[history]
WHEATON, Illinois (AP) -- Andy Morgan can't dance, but he figured he was in no danger of embarrassing himself.
After all, he went to a high school that did not permit dancing. And when it came time to pick a college, he settled on a Christian school that had not allowed social dancing since the war. The Civil War.

This is the school that made the politically correct decision to drop "Crusaders" as its mascot. I guess Saddam Hussein, Bin Laden, and Ayatollah Khameneh would have found the name offensive.

Wheaton was also a dry town at one time, but I think it may have been repealed.

We are still a dry town, but you can drive ten miles to the next town and go to a liquor store. You can now get a membership to the bar at local restaurants and enjoy a glass or wine or cocktail with your dinner. It is a hassle. We have voted for it, but it always loses. And a lot of the people who vote against allowing liquor stores here, also drink....

It must have been a million years ago that Wheaton student Richard M. Nixon ran for class president (or something) on a platform of overturning the Wheaton prohibition on dancing.

I'm glad you pinged Drsteve. I haven't seen his "homey don't dance" graphic in a while.
The thing that always troubled me about that sin was that I have no rhythm. I'm genetically incapable of committing "dance."

Funny how we want to prevent anything from being taken away from the Bible but we unconsciously add more to it, ie. moving to music, hair styles, ear piercing for only males, etc. We decry the Pharisees until we take a look in the mirror, then we put down our stones.

Whoops. My bad. Nixon ran on that platform at Whittier College, not Wheaton.

I agree! What will be next? Goldfish swallowing? Pole
sitting? Stuffing multitudes of students into telephone
booths or Volkswagons? All kidding aside, it is kind of
sad though that one of the last bastions of holding young
people to a strict moral code is starting to loosen its
grip. The nation needs a streak of puritanism among its
citizenry to avoid losing what little moral fiber it has
left.

First Baylor a few years ago, and now Wheaton? What's this world coming to?
To: buffyt
Lubbock used to be a dry town too, and I once knew a lady (?) who worked her way through college running trunks loads of booze to the city limits for her classmates.
To: buckalfa
I have a good friend who saw her 2 yr old daughter bouncing up and down to music. She told her "No, no. No dancing. Bad. God is watching you and he says 'bad'."
OK for her to not approve of dancing and to train her child according to her own disapproval. Her choice. However, incorrect reading of God's true Word and shouldn't be taught as God's word when it isn't in His Word.

Puritanism doesn't mean poo without faith. Without faith it is a dead body which warps into all kinds of new, immoral puritanisms.
