This is what the newspapers and newscasts would be running everyday if the media decided to report the same headline statistics they pound on day after day as soldiers die in Iraq.
Can you imagine what the impact on the public would be if they headlined every death of this sort every day! The suicide rate would probably quadruple because they would have half of the people thinking they were going to die any minute now so why not just get it over with!
It's definitely not a good thing that any soldier has to die for any reason, but that is one of the hazards of the job they signed up for and most of them knew that going in. Yet the media feels the need to keep a day by day tally at the beginning of the news almost constantly it seems! It's almost like they can't wait to report it!
You don't think there might be a hidden agenda behind that do you? Nah... I didn't think so!

But what percentage of Americans in America are dying each day vs. the percentage of Americans in Iraq dying each day?

Yup, more people are killed over the 4th of July holiday than any other the last I saw. I think one year many years ago it was something like 600 or more one four day 4th holiday. We can kill em on the highways and byways, but that causes no reaction except to the families who lost the 600.

People would really flip if you added rapes and child abductions to the list.

I'm deeply saddened. If George Bush wouldn't have given a tax break to the wealthy....
To: RogerWilko
Tripe. Sorry if it upsets you, but young men and women are dying. We owe it to their sacrifice to be aware.
To: RogerWilko
No it's important to report American casualities. They way they do it is what is disgusting.

Great post...Looks like life expectency may be better in Iraq than it is in the US.

We need to implement a socialist nanny state. Sure it would be uncomfortable and inconvenient, but if we could save just one life, wouldn't it be worth it?

I'd be interested to see the mortality rates in a place like Los Angeles County. I suspect there's a higher likelihood of being gunned down there than there is in Iraq.

Agreed. The fact that so many people here get upset by the idea that the media reports their deaths is disturbing. The very least the media can do in this case is to report their sacrifice. It's better than their deaths being covered up.

Sorry, but you forgot to list how many trees were felled, how many animals became roadkill, how many species became extinct, how many acres of grass was paved over, etc etc.

How dare you question fuzzy logic.

Good thread. But be prepared to be flamed by people who totally miss your point.
