PHOENIX -- After flying over a desert where hundreds of his compatriots have died trying to sneak into the United States, Mexican President Vicente Fox began a personal campaign Tuesday to sell Americans on reforms that would make crossing the border legal for more Mexican migrants in search of work.

Reviving an effort disrupted by the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, Fox began a three-day swing through the American Southwest by telling Arizona's political leaders that an overhaul of U.S. immigration laws, his top foreign policy priority, would be in the economic interest of both countries.

I am tired of Fox's sob stories about his citizens breaking our laws.

Where is the compassion for Americans who have died at the hands of these illegals?

Fox is half right on this issue. It should be easier to cross the border to work and live with one stipulation. Mexico becomes the 51st state.

What the article fails to mention is that while Janet Napolitano was grovelling to Fox, just 30 miles down Interstate 10 south of Phoenix, a running gun battle was in progress between rival gangs of illegal immigrant smugglers resulting in 4 dead and 5 injured.

On the surface it sounds kooky, but think about the possibilities for a moment. Vast oil reserves, huge manufacturing base, (formally ours anyway), natural resources out the ying-yang, and investment possibilities to numerous to post. Remember the boost to the economy when the Alaska oil pipeline was constructed? We'd see reverse migration. And we'd have a smaller Southern border to defend.

Does that mean that Vicente plans on paying the bills (billions of dollars) for the care of his border hoppers? I don't think so. Good deal for Mexico, disaster for America.

I don't agree with that. I don't fancy having to pay welfare and healthcare and education to 100 million poor uneducated Mexicans.

We do already. It's called foreign aid.

What are the costs to the States now dealing with illegals not to mention the illegals incarcerated which is a large portion of the US prison population?

The dollars generated by development of Mexico and the Americanization of their economy would benefit the US most.IMHO

Big Foot - The Mexican government would never allow us to develop their country and keep( or share) the benefits. They won't even sell us their Pemex gas cheaper. I do know they kicked out American citizens who had their homes there, and gave them nothing in return.

Did I miss a memo? It seems like 75% of all the articles I've read today on FR are now being excepted. Is the new policy now that everything (including LA Times, Wa Compost, MSNBC) gets excerpted except vanities and tabloid news?

I know what I propose will never happen, at least my lifetime, but it is an alternative to the status quo. I'd bet a taco if you asked the average citizen of Mexico if they'd vote for a plan like this, they'd say si! They come here anyway, take America to them.

OH Canada!.....you may be next. :o

If you go to the source, you will see this is an LA Times article. I haven't noticed a big increase in the number of excerpted posts. Could it be you are just lucky today? :)

Here is the thread that lists the LAT/WP affilates. It can be located on the home page of Free Republic, in the "Important Legal Notice" section. The title of the link there is Amended Final Judgment.

The actual thread is titled:
Scanned images of the LAT/WP vs Free Republic Settlement docs and Amended Final Judgment.

The elite of Mexico are the most corrupt people on this earth ---- why would we expect the multi-millionaire Fox to care about laws? Mexican politicians are all out for whatever they can get, the office of presidency is only about making huge money for themselves ---- none care anything about the country of Mexico.
