October 31, 2003 -- WASHINGTON - Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld said yesterday that revolting new Iraq torture tapes "portray a regime that was about as vicious as any regime could conceivably be." Rumsfeld also said "there are a lot" more videotapes that show similar atrocities from the Saddam Hussein era.

It's great that these stories are now seeing the light of day.

Now if they'd only pay as much attention to the torture in China.

Thank you kindly :)

BTW... if I may ask... what's the syntax I need to use to bold text here? There's something I want to post here related to this matter, and bolding is going to be critical to illustrate something. Thanks in advance for any help :)

"When you have people . . . cutting off people's heads and chopping off their fingers and chopping off their hands, throwing them off three-story buildings, you learn something about a group of people and how they lived their lives and how they treated their people," Rumsfeld said yesterday.

Sounds like the hazing days at my old frat house....

You can only bold in the text of your post, not in the title. Just add < B> (without the space between the < B and you'll get BOLD

< /B> (without the space) closes the tag.

"Fascinating on the spot reports from Iraq..."

What evidence is there that this blog is authentic? To be honest, this reads like a liberal's wet dream of what Iraqis -should- be saying. Seriously - right down to accusing the GOP of a badly done mimic site, saying things like "One good thing - at least the UN will be managing the money" and defending Al Jazeera's journalistic integrity?! Lots of other highly out-of-context references that make it sound like someone who lived a long time in the U.S. Sorry, bud, but this looks horrifically fake liberal propaganda to me.

Saddam Hussein was a son of a bitch. We continue to prove it. The entire business is being centered on Saddam Hussein. There are some very slick sells going on and people are getting tangled up in the emotional stimulation.

The fact is, jihadists have recently killed 35,000 people in the Kasimer district of India by much the same methods shown in the tapes. It's been going on in India since before the time of Gandhi. The same thing is going on in the Philipinnes and Indonesia. And so forth. We, and many others, would be in the same situation as we are now if Hussein had never been born. The war against Hussein is a popular political diversion which is scarcely relevant to 9/11.

Check out CNN's version of this report:

Gruesome videotape allegedly shows brutal Fedayeen Saddam punishment
Thursday, October 30, 2003 Posted: 11:56 PM EST (0456 GMT)

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- A gruesome videotape found in April by U.S. troops in Iraq allegedly shows the brutal punishment administered by the Fedayeen Saddam to enforce discipline under the regime of Saddam Hussein.

The tape was recovered by the 308th Civil Affairs Brigade from a building near the Al Saadoan Police station on April 22, according to Pentagon sources.

The tape was not released by the Pentagon, but was obtained by CNN from independent sources. It could not be determined when the tape was made.

An analysis by the U.S. military concludes the victims on the tape appear to be members of the Fedayeen Saddam who have been accused of crimes ranging from desertion to disobeying orders.

The Fedayeen, which at one point numbered between 18,000 and 40,000 troops, were young soldiers recruited from regions loyal to former Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein, according to globalsecurity.org, a nonpartisan international policy research group. The unit reported directly to the Presidential Palace, rather than through the army command, and were responsible for patrol and anti-smuggling duties. It was a politically reliable force that could be counted on to support Saddam against domestic opponents.

Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld said he's seen the tape, and it is typical of the brutality of the former Iraqi regime.

"There are a lot of them around," Rumsfeld said, referring to tapes of brutal punishment, "and they portray a regime that was about as vicious as any regime could conceivably be."

On the tape, what appear to be Fedayeen Saddam members and Republican Guard troops are shown administering cruel punishments, including chopping off fingers, cutting off tongues, breaking a wrist with a heavy stick, and throwing people off a multi-story building.

Also depicted is a beheading by sword, which takes several attempts to complete.

"When you have people filming in front of crowds cheering and clapping, you have people cutting off people's tongues and cutting off people's heads and chopping off their fingers and chopping off their hands, throwing them off three-story buildings, you learn something about a group of people and how they lived their lives and how they treated their people," Rumsfeld said at a Pentagon briefing.

-- CNN Senior Pentagon Correspondent Jamie McIntyre contributed to this report

--------------------------------

Even on the front page's link to this report, it squeezes in allegedly. You'd really think they were afraid of being sued by the Feyadeen if it wasn't real. They used qualifiers in every possible place they could, as if they literally were afraid of a hostile lawsuit. One would think they'd have said allegedly when reporting that second hand smoke kills millions, or that "Bush allegedly lied".

They seem to be deeply saddened that the Fedayeen would ever be accused of such mischief.

CNN implying the tape is fake? As Neil Cavuto said about the French, what the press lacks in nerve they make up for in gall!

Every reporter covering Iraq had access to mountains of documented reports of abuse by Saddam and pals. Reporters had access to Saddam's victims.

The press covered up Saddam's evil history and lied to the world. As the press promoted ANSWER's anti-war rallies and parroted Saddam's lies before the war, Saddam's thugs were executing Saddam's critics in Iraq.

E. Jordan admitted to covering up Saddam's cruelty to have access to Saddam and Iraq for years before the war. John Burns exposed his press peers for doing the same in Iraq during the war.

Six months have past since Pres. Bush called an end to major combat operations in Iraq May 1, still no Congressional investigation into this press cover-up and major scandal.

Like with the pictures of the Hussein sons, they will say that the pictures aren't authentic. Then, when that doesn't work, they will try to say that it is OLD footage, like that lessens the impact.
