St. Cloud Assistant Fire Chief Killed By Hit-And-Run Driver
Oct 28, 2003 11:39 am US/Central St. Cloud, Minn. (AP) St. Cloud firefighters are mourning an assistant fire chief killed by a hit-and-run driver.
Don Billig was with a volunteer division that responded to a call in St. Augusta Monday night.
As the firefighters left, they stopped to replace some barricades for a county road construction zone.
Authorities say Billig was replacing the barricades when a pickup hit the crew's truck, which then hit Billig. The driver of the pickup fled on foot.
Police used helicopters and K9 units to search for the suspect, but could not find him. The 36-year-old St. Cloud man turned himself in Tuesday morning and was booked on felony hit and run.
Prosecutors have until noon Thursday to charge the driver.
Billig was an 18-year veteran in the department. He leaves behind a wife and three children.
