WISH-TV Poll Looks at Key Races

Democrat Julia Carson is locked in another tough battle for re-election. But can Republican Brose McVey unseat the incumbent? A new WISH-TV poll tells you where the candidates stand now.

The WISH-TV poll shows that challenger McVey must win a majority of undecided voters to pull this one out. The numbers put McVey at 37 percent and Carson with 46 percent of the vote. Libertarian Andy Horning is only a small factor and 12 percent are undecided.

McVey has been telling supporters that his internal campaign polls show the race to be a close one. "This poll's a little bit different than those but if anything, it might remind us that we’ve got to work hard all the way through to Election Day and there's a lot of time left," he said.

By the same token, Julia Carson says she is skeptical about any poll. Carson said that in her experience, "I 'm always behind in the polls and I get nervous when somebody says I'm high in the polls. So, we just try to keep driving people to the polls."

The WISH-TV poll findings suggest that McVey's strategy could be more effective. "We had only one person say they were voting to replace Julia Carson, which has been the main theme of Brose McVey," said Brian Vargus, WISH-TV political analyst. The IUPUI Public Opinion Lab conducted the survey.

That could be why a new television ad from the national Republican Campaign Committee is attacking Carson. The ad claims that Carson has been late paying her taxes ten times. McVey says he can't control that committee, but "I've been told by local media and others that the substance of that ad is accurate and I hope so," he said.

Carson has responded with an ad that quotes Winston Churchill: "While they do their worst, I will continue to do my best." She blames McVey for the change in tone. "It's just like gross distortions, misleading advertisements and he can't say he's not responsible," she said. Carson said the late payments happened during a time when she was caring for her dying mother. She paid the taxes and the fines.

Among other findings, the poll revealed that Indianapolis Mayor Bart Peterson has an approval rating of 75 percent – which explains why he appears in a Carson campaign ad.

By contrast, the poll found that Governor Frank O'Bannon has an approval rating of 41 percent in Marion County.
