Poll Shows Rogers with Growing Lead
Rogerss Lead Over Joe Turnham Grows from 8 to 12%
Anniston (AL) A recent poll by research firm McLaughlin and Associates showed Mike Rogers leading Democrat nominee Joe Turnham 44 to 32%.
The September 19 poll results also show Republican candidate Mike Rogers leading Turnham on which candidate is best able to handle a particular issue. For example, when asked about Social Security, poll respondents favored Rogers 30% to Turnhams 18%. The conservative Rogers also beat Turnham 30% to 19% regarding improving the economy and creating jobs.
"Mike Rogers remains the clear frontrunner in the election for Congress. He has maintained his momentum and added to his decisive lead over the other candidates," said pollster Jim McLaughlin.
The survey was conducted among 300 likely general election voters on September 16-17, 2002 in Alabama's new 3rd Congressional District. The margin of error is +/- 5.7%.

Poll Ping!
This is an open seat, vacated by Bob Riley, who is running for Governor. Most of the experts view this race as a toss-up or slight lean to the GOP.
I'd be a bit cautious about these poll results. I'm guessing that this is a partisan poll, and there's an awfully high margin of error (5.7%).
Coop: What do you know about McLaughlin & Associates? Are they a GOP firm or independent?
If you want on or off my poll ping list, let me know!

Looks like GOP. The only poll in my spreadsheet from them is for Pubbie McCallum in WI.

Please forgive the ignorance - I'm a former Bama resident - is Riley (The vacater of this seat) GOP or Dem? Riley is a Republican. He is challenging the Democrat incumbent governor, Don Siegelman. Riley has a 2-3 point lead in most of the recent polling.

For Rogers to get that kind of margin, he needs to be cutting into the black vote, and eroding away to close to nothing the Dem base amoung white voters vis a vis a moderate Dem. Bush carried the district by 4%, and that is above generic GOP strength. So I would be cautious, but I have always had the district a very slight GOP lean on my speadsheet, except at the very beginning.
