You always hurt the one you love

Yes, it's here. TGIED.

But there's still time to check the mailbox, fax machine and TV for those late sucker punches that began flying last Friday afternoon.

The big one, of course, was Gov. Roy Barnes' burst of TV ads aimed at Sonny Perdue, accusing him of helping "a coldblooded cop killer."

Perdue said Barnes was trying to hurt him because he's the front-runner in today's GOP vote for governor. Linda Schrenko and Bill Byrne said Barnes was actually trying to help Perdue by improving the state senator's standing among undecideds. That may be over-thinking the situation.

But if not, imagine the possibilities for defense attorneys: "Your honor, my client didn't beat that man senseless. He was boosting the guy's name ID. And his wallet, too."

No one's going quietly into that good night

Bob Irvin's campaign workers were making a last, plaintive cry that they had been the victims of a weekend cheap shot by U.S. Senate rival Saxby Chambliss. A flier sent out to voters said Chambliss was the "only" candidate endorsed by the National Right to Life organization.

Strictly speaking, that's true. But left unsaid is the fact that both Chambliss and Irvin have been endorsed by the Georgia Right to Life organization. And the state chapter actually represents a more strident faction of the anti-abortion movement.

To paraphrase Mr. Bumble, then the law is an asterisk

In Cobb County, Larry Burke, candidate for state court judge, had been touting himself as Judge Burke. The state Judicial Qualifications Commission took issue with that, seeing that he only acted as a substitute on traffic court. Burke has tried to fix things by placing an asterisk next to the title of judge. One of his opponents, David Darden, has called him on it.

Now this is a mind-boggling endorsement

The Southern Party of Georgia, whose members are among the flaggers still protesting the new state flag, has gone and endorsed John Linder in the 7th Congressional District race.

Why? Because, it says, Bob Barr was the first member of the Georgia congressional delegation to put the new flag outside his Washington office.

The awful things said in the Cobb chairman's race

Again in Cobb County, Jack Collins is running against Sam Olens in the Republican primary for commission chairman. This is where the race is decided. So Collins scoured the archives for the most damaging words ever uttered by Olens. And he sent them on a postcard to voters over the weekend.

And the words? "The more counties work together on transportation, the better our region will be." That darned Olens and his radical thinking.

But here's the kicker: This wasn't your traditional, racially loaded tirade against a regional bus service that would bring urbanites from Atlanta across the Chattahoochee River.

This was a tirade against interlopers leaching in from Paulding County, of all places.

Thirty years ago, certain Cobb County residents wanted to keep blacks from coming in. Now they want to build a wall against Bob Barr supporters. Yes, yes, we know. It isn't logical to think that Barr supporters would use a bus service to steal TV sets. But people do have to look out for their property values.

Your budget but my employees, Schrenko says

Whether she wins the Republican nomination for governor or not, expect state School Superintendent Linda Schrenko to play the pebble to Gov. Roy Barnes' shoe until November. Schrenko is preparing to fight the Barnes-backing state Board of Education over its decision Friday to fire six of her staffers, five of whom also happen to be campaign contributors. Schrenko said the board had no authority to fire Department of Education employees, even though the agency's payroll was over budget and funding for the positions had ended June 30. Every fight between the superintendent and the board becomes a battle of Schrenko versus Barnes, but this one may wind up in court.

An endorsement for the rest of us

Just in case his supporters didn't get the message the first time around, Libertarian Wayne Parker sent his endorsements in the 11th Congressional District via an e-mail greeting card Monday. The card includes the image of a fake book, "Election Rigging for Dummies." It's purported to have been written by state House Speaker Tom Murphy and edited by "King" Roy Barnes, who explain the nuances of gerrymandering and how to run unopposed.

The text of the e-card is a word-for-word repeat of an Insider item from Aug. 15. It explains that Parker, who won't be on the ballot until November, has endorsed Democrat Roger Kahn and Republican Bob Herriott.

This Libertarian guy Parker has a real chance to win. He already has more signatures on his petition than any of the candidates will get in the primary.

He has more signatures than 4 out of 5 of the primary candidates got. More than double three of them. If signatures were votes he would have beat all the Republicans. they are not votes, they are harder to get.

My first post was a prediction. This one is facts.
