El Paso Rep. Beto O'Rourke isn't betting his bid for toppling Sen. Ted Cruz entirely on backlash against President Donald Trump, or probes of Russian ties to his campaign, or his efforts to ban Muslim visitors, or deport young immigrants, or wall off the southern border.
But he isn't shy about raising those topics and using them to tar the polarizing senator for his coziness with an even more polarizing figure in the White House.
This being Texas, where Democrats haven't won a statewide contest since 1994, stoking misgivings about Trump may be O'Rourke's best shot at stopping Cruz from winning a second term next year.
"He represents the most dangerous threat that our democracy has faced in my lifetime. I don't think he's fit to be our president," he said over coffee at a cafe near the Capitol, warning that history will scrutinize this era.....

Cruz is a closet NeverTrumper.
He sure hides it well by siding with the president on most issues. Too bad the real #NeverTrump-ers don’t do it that way, huh? Like McStain, Linseed, Milt, Egg McMuffin and Corker.
Facts sure are stubborn things! LOL!
It’s interesting that Trump said he was the greatest thing for six months. Then he said he’s worse than Hillary.
Cruz seemed pretty bright and on the right path until he claimed that Trump supporters caused violins at Trump rallies.
Cruz has never backed down from that position.
(Plus his wife was CFR?) WUWT?
And the last time I checked, the Dallas Morning News was getting huge blowback (in the form of cancellations) for supporting Hillary.
I don’t think there is any love lost between the two men but they have similar political agendas.
I am glad to see Ted Cruz is man enough to work with President Trump
Lyn Ted is a Never Trumper. You can put lipstick on him, give him a new dress, but in the end he is still Lyn Ted, the Never Trumper who most recently teamed with McCain to kill ObamaCare repeal.
100 percent false.
The Dallas Democrat Blues endorsed Hillary, as did every major paperin Texas. The voters pay no attention to them. They are banking on the Latino vote to bring them back from exile. Lots of luck. Of the 8 Mexican-American neighbors on our block, 5 of them voted for Trump.
Complete falsehood.
I certainly hope that is not the case but time will tell.
Trump has bashed Cruz multiple times.
Cruz could easily be not on board.
The bill that Rand Paul and Ted Cruz killed did not "repeal" Obamacare. It was a sham and I'm thankful to them for exposing it.
Thanks 2ndDivisionVet.
They bashed each other during the primaries. They bashed the other candidates during the primaries. They were running for the same nomination. That’s politics. Sorry if that bothers you.
Trump said some pretty harsh things about Cruz and his family. Again, that’s politics. But it was rough and it took Ted a little while to get past some of it (such as insulting his wife and accusing his father of involvement in the JFK assassination.) But eventually, he endorsed Trump. Later than some would have liked, but he did it. It made some of his own supporters mad at him.
Since the election, Cruz has voted with President Trump most of the time. They have disagreements on some issues; that’s to be expected. No two people agree on everything.
I see no evidence for your claim.
It’s a closet. You can’t see into a closet.
Only when someone comes out of the closet can you see.
What, you mean he did not vote the same as McCain?
That makes no sense.
What, cant put McCain and Lyn Ted in same sentence?
