One candidate, who says he jumped into the Republican presidential race with the understanding he would have the support of evangelical leaders across the country, is now lamenting their lack of support.
Following last week's debate in Las Vegas, former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee told National Review's Tim Alberta he was still scratching his head over evangelical leaders' recent decision to back U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) instead of him:
"For reasons I don't fully understand, years and years of actually doing something and getting things done didn't matter. And I don't understand that ...
"You know, everybody has a right to do what they want to do. But it was disappointing to me. These are guys I've worked with for years and years. Many of them I've helped with their projects and their various endeavors."
Huckabee, who has long supported evangelists' endeavors, had broad support from Christian conservatives in his 2008 presidential bid and may have assumed that support would continue. If so, he greatly miscalculated the appeal Cruz would have with the American public and the evangelical leaders' desire to get behind a solid Christian who could win.
The 2008 winner of the Iowa Republican Caucus has been languishing in the single digits the entire campaign. His 30-day polling average in Iowa—and in national polling—sits at just 2 percent. He's averaging much lower in New Hampshire and South Carolina.
It seems unlikely he will drop out before the first-in-the-nation Iowa Caucus on Feb. 1. According to his campaign's October financial disclosures to the Federal Election Commission, he was taking in more than he was spending, and he had more than $760,000 cash on hand going into the fourth quarter.
I saw one guy describe Cruz as “Trump with better hair and 60 more IQ points.”
Change “Trump” to “Huckabee” and change “60” to “80” and you’ve got your answer there, Huckster.

It is true that Huckabee has worked hard on some of these projects that soc cons work on.....not all of them are “political”. And he really has walked the walk.
So at the human level, you gotta feel bad for him. He’s done a lot of good.
But that doesn’t make him entitled to endorsements for President.

He thought he could quit his show and slide into the White House. Probably wished he could go back
Huck had ONE job to do this primary season. And he failed.

Evangelicals are not stupid. They know that someone who puts forth a specifically evangelical persona cannot possibly win a General Election.
They want people of faith, but not so pandering as to turn off the non-religious voters, of which there are an increasing number year after year.
One strength although outstanding in comparison to most Rino’s does not make up for years of demonstrated weaknesses, I think he is an excellent speaker he can talk a good game but in important issues Huck has not walked the talk in his years as governor.
Huckabee reminds me of a number of the pastors who have influenced my walk over the decades. I am grateful for all of them, but I would not necessarily choose any of them for the Oval Office. Gov. Huckabee, your ministry is elsewhere.
He has. Yet he favors too much gov interference in things like schools weighing kids and sending reports to parents about their kids being fat. He's not a conservative.

Well put. And one of the bright spots during this campaign is that the evangelical “leaders” seem to have grasped that as well.
But Huck’s entitled whining here is really off-putting.
Because Cruz has a realistic chance of winning, Huck.
You can guess the rest of what I’m thinking.
Perhaps releasing murderous felons to later prey upon innocent people and law enforcement had something to do with it, Mike.
Where have you been the last eight years, Huck?
Instead of working for local candidates, building up chits, and fighting hard for traditional marriage and tax and BUDGET cuts (unlike his governorship), Huck cruised along with his boring TV show and built a big bucks house.
Not exactly the way to build up a crusade among the angry Trump voters.
What has Huckster actually gotten done?
Perhaps it’s because they chose to back the winner who also aligns with their views on faith over the loser who also aligns on their views on faith?
