Former Bogota mayor and longtime Bergen County politician Steve Lonegan is expected to head up Ted Cruzâs New Jersey leadership team.
Cruz will announce Loneganâs appointment at a press conference in Rahway Thursday at 4:30 p.m., Savejersey.com reported.
Lonegan, a Teaneck native, was mayor of Bogota from 1995 to 2007. He is director of Monetary Policy for the American Principles Project and is the organizationâs national spokesman on the Federal Reserve Systemâs monetary policies.
In 2006, Lonegan filed paperwork for a public referendum in Bogota that wouldâve made English the official language of the municipality. The County Clerkâs Office rejected the question being placed on the ballot.
Lonegan unsuccessfully ran as a candidate for the Republican nominee for governor in the 2005 and 2009 election. He also lost a bid to represent New Jerseyâs 3rd Congressional District in 2014. He also lost the 2013 special senate election to Democrat Corey Booker.
After the press conference, Cruz will attend a $1,000-a-plate fundraiser in Englewood, according to savejersey.com.
Steve Lonegan
American Businessman
Steven Mark “Steve” Lonegan is an American businessman, author and former Mayor of Bogota, New Jersey, serving from 1995 to 2007. A member of the Republican Party, Lonegan currently works as Director of Monetary Policy for the American Principles Project. He serves as the organization’s national spokesman on monetary policies of the Federal Reserve System and directs the Fix the Dollar project.
Lonegan is a good man. His recommendation carries weight.
I remember Lonagan from his primary run against Christie. he was the Freeper choice as I recall.
Steve has been a stalwart conservative in the cesspool that is my state, but this should guarantee a dismal showing in NJ by Cruz. Lonegan has never won a general election in NJ aside from being mayor of Bogota. He and Murray Sabrin are the Pat Paulson of NJ politics. It is a bonus though that Christie hates Lonegan, so good for Steve.
