When Ted Cruz announced his run for the presidency, the big question was whether he had only a small chance to win or no chance at all. Since then, a lot has gone right for him.
Mr. Cruz still does not enjoy an easy road to the Republican nomination, not by any means. But it is a testament to just how strange this year has been that a candidate like him, who is despised by many of his own Republican colleagues in the Senate, now has a plausible path to the Republican nomination.
Some of his opportunity is the result of his own strength. He has succeeded in building a robust campaign organization, buoyed by fund-raising tallies of the sort we generally havenât seen from anti-establishment, conservative candidates. Fund-raising isnât everything, but itâs a big part of why candidates like Mike Huckabee and Rick Santorum have not been serious contenders this time....

Wonder if there is any way to read this without going to the NYTimes. Almost have to take a shower afterwords.
I don’t find it strange at all — he is clearly the most qualified candidate. Now qualified is not quite the same as electable, and of course Donald Trump is probably leading in that category. But as the field narrows, the eventual ballot question comes more into focus — which of the two should be the nominee, then strengths of Cruz and weaknesses of Trump that have not yet been put into sharp contrast will be advanced.
Anyway, I think many would be quite happy to see a Trump-Cruz ticket, whatever we hope Cruz will do for the country can probably be done just about equally from either office if the two men see eye to eye on big issues.
Right through the heart of the left.
Maybe the NYT wishes it so.
I was amazed that he seems to have eidetic memory, the way he spouted off about the media, naming many candidates and the ridiculous questions asked of them.

My thoughts exactly. Nothing good comes from the NYTimes.
It was a good article. I recommend reading it in it’s entirety.
A path to win the nomination can be charted for even Linda Graham, if one so desires.
Here's the info abt the author:
Nate Cohn covers elections, polling and demographics for The Upshot, a Times politics and policy site. Previously, he was a staff writer for The New Republic. Before entering journalism, he was a research assistant and Scoville Fellow at the Stimson Center, where he contributed to analysis of South Asia and the defense budget.
I think it was Dan Patrick who said Ted Cruz is the type of guy who wouldn’t run if he didn’t see a better than average chance of winning.
The rest of the candidates need to withdraw. They don’t make for a single candle against the brilliance of Ted Cruz. Time for the Trumpoonery-Buffonery to end, as well as Kasich; H(F)uckabee, and the rest of this undercard team.
If it was in my power to select the next president I’d select Cruz.
Still feel that his best shot at the WH is to become Trump’s VP.
Well, I agree, but thankfully it looks like one of Cruz’s biggest roadblocks, Dr. Carson’s has imploded. The race is on for his voters.
He has an excellent chance. I think he’s the Republican who would have the best shot of winning next year.
I’m a Cruz fan. He’s my # 1 pick and I gave to his senate campaign when he first ran but I would not be too quick to dismiss Dr. Carson. The media attacks against him this week are unbelievable. I’d at least wait until the weekend is over and the smoke clears to see if it has actually hurt him or helped him. You may be correct but at least give it the weekend ;- )
I agree that we have to wait longer until we can call Carson finished, but the problem with unconventional candidates such as Carson and Trump is that they have to sprint to the finish line. And if you trip up when you’re trying to sprint to the finish line, then you’re screwed. It’s rotten the double standard that the media has for conservative candidates, but in the end Carson fabricated something (although I think it’s a poor choice of wording and not a scandal on Carson’s part) and that’s going to hurt his campaign. His support was tepid with a large amount of his supporters stating in polling data that they were not exclusively committed to him. Tuesday’s debate is going to be fun, it’s do or die time for Carson and the long knives will be out in full force. If he doesn’t Do damage control in the second debate he could be in single digits come December.
“Anyway, I think many would be quite happy to see a Trump-Cruz ticket,”
Cruz would never serve in a Trump administration because Trump is not a conservative. Neither would he have Trump in his administration.
Senator Cruz is a statesman and a whole lot smarter than any of the Democrat prospective nominees. By comparison, Mr. Cruz makes Hillary Clinton look pathetic.
There were like 2 sentences on his ‘path’. Happy they wrote it but pretty weak and lacking detail.
