URBANDALE, Iowa Sen. Ted Cruz was Iowa on Saturday for the opening of his campaign office in Urbandale, making him the seventh Republican to set up shop in Iowa.
Cruz and staffers opened their office just six months after the Republican first announced his candidacy. This opening means more than half of the 2016 presidential contenders are spending campaign cash on local rent space.
Nearly 100 people including supporters and campaign staffers attended the opening.
"I think it shows a commitment to the community to the state and to his supporters particularly, so he is here for the long term, said John Berg, a supporter from Green County.
Cruz makes 10 of 19 candidates who are renting local office space.
"You have to have staff with boots on the ground to identify and encourage and motivate supporters to show up to the caucuses. An office here in Des Moines, in the Des Moines metro area or across the whole state of Iowa is absolutely crucial, said KCCI political analyst Dennis Goldford.
Cruz said the timing of the opening was intentional.
"The reason why we delayed opening a physical office until after Labor Day is that we didn't want to expend the funds until we got closer to caucus date so that we'd have the money in the bank, Cruz told his audience Saturday.
The goal is to run "an exceptionally frugal campaign, Cruz said, saying hes trying to avoid the financial pitfalls of former candidates Rick Perry and Scott Walker.
"They're good men who have been terrific governors, but both their campaigns ran out of money. Because when you spend your money early, you don't have the resources to communicate with voters. We're committed to not following those mistakes, Cruz said.
Following Saturdays campaign Cruz will head to northern Iowa to give the keynote address at the Cornerstone Republican Gala in Winnebego County.
The Cruz campaign would not release how much it is spending per month on the Urbandale office.
On KCCI 8 News at 10, hear what Cruz said about the resignation of Congressman John Boehner.
Annoying that we play the first (and second) games of the season in blue territory.

Only if you accept the premise that they are.
Iowa and NH - red states in 2016 and beyond. That's the kind of thinking we need.
