Can the Republican Party Survive Trump?
The Atlantic ^ | August 24, 2015 | Molly Ball

The GOP frontrunner’s surprising staying power has inspired soul-searching and agony among party elites.

What is happening to the Republican Party? I put that question to Lindsey Graham, the senator from South Carolina and basement-dwelling presidential candidate, who was getting ready to hold a campaign event in Hooksett, New Hampshire. “Well, the front-runner is crazy,” Graham said.

He was referring, of course, to Donald Trump, the GOP’s seemingly unstoppable chart-topper, who has survived outrage after outrage that would have ruined a conventional candidate. He commands, on average, double the support, among potential Republican primary voters, of his nearest challenger. Graham—who is running in 15th place—calls him “a huckster billionaire whose political ideas are gibberish.” And while he expects voters eventually to come to their senses, he said, “I think a certain amount of damage has been done already.”

As Trump evinces surprising staying power atop the Republican field, nervous party members increasingly fret that he is hurting the image of the GOP and damaging its eventual nominee—who most assume will not be Trump. The most obvious problem is Trump’s outspoken opposition to immigration and immigrants, which has offended Hispanics—a fast-growing voter demographic the party can’t afford to lose ground with—and dragged other candidates into a discussion of inflammatory ideas like ending birthright citizenship....

The more the RINOs scream, the more I like Trump.

Trump is merely in the game to elect Hitlery....this is a rat ploy and it always works...

No matter how many times you post that silly statement it isn't going to make it true.

Trump is in it to win. He has said that Hillary belongs in the big house, not the white house. That's a pretty stupid thing for a stalking horse to say about his favorite candidate.

Don't be stupid. If you don't like Trump, then vote for someone else. Lindsey Graham needs your support. Vote for her.

The Republican Party will survive. The conservative part of it may not survive Trump.

If Hillary gets out of the race then Trump will have no reason to continue his bid?

If Trump’s only success is destroying the republican party then I’m all for him.

If only. I remember a possibly apocryphal story from the 64 republican convention: One Republican grandee to another Rockefeller supporter, "Who are these people?" He was talking about the Goldwater supporters.

I think too many of these fools do not understand that their "autopsy" of the 2012 campaign was rejected by voters, because several of its conclusions were viewed as a rejection of those voter.

I really wish you would stop spewing leftist lies. Trump is 69 years old. Let’s assume he has been voting since he was 18. He was a registered Democrat for only 8 years out of the 51 years of voting. He has been Republican, Independent and a member of the Reform Party. Which is the party of Ross Perot, who at one time wanted him to run as president on that ticket. Get your facts straight! People on the right aren’t any smarter than the LIVs on the left.

Yep. Saying Clinton “should be in prison” might not sound like something a supporter would say. But if you put your tinfoil hat on it is decoded to Hillary “has my vote.”

Whose idea was it for the GOP to declare war on the Republican baae? Trump is saving the party just like Reagan did by bringing in a new generation of voters.

“Well, the front-runner is crazy,” Graham said.

Snide remarks from one so politically impotent don't mean a thing.

And the GOP is your great shining hope? If they weren't lying and backstabbing, what exactly would they be good at?

What if someone said, "cherry just in it to shill for Bush?"

The question I’m surprised nobody has asked...

Can Trump survive the Republican Party?

I’m not worried about the Republican party surviving, any more than I’m worried about the Democrat party surviving, I’d love to see both abolished and nothing more than footnotes in the history books.

They have done everything they can to push Trump out of the race, trying right now to force him to sign onto a “pact” I think they call it to run only as a Republican, since they still fear he will run 3rd party, and I still think they will do anything, including cheat, to make sure he is not nominated.

So can Trump survive the Republican party?
