Guam could have a voice in Ted Cruz's presidential run

Could Guam play a pivotal role in picking the eventual Republican nominee for president? That's what a staffer for Senator Ted Cruz believes. And he traveled all the way from Washington, DC to let local party members know that the GOP candidate wants their votes come convention time.

Dennis Lennox says under Republican Party rules, a candidate must win a majority of delegates from at least eight states to be eligible for nomination. With as many as 17 candidates potentially dividing up those votes, the eight-state threshold may be harder to come by.

However, GOP rules recognize Guam and the other territories just the same as states. "The Republican Party believes that territories should have an equal say in the nomination of the Republican nominee," Lennox stated, "And I'm here on behalf of Senator Cruz to ensure that Guam does have a voice in that process. We believe that Guam will be every bit as important as Iowa or New Hampshire."

He could not say if Senator Cruz himself plans a trip here, but Lennox was sent to meet with local republicans and identify their top concerns. He added, "Veterans, defense, national security, economic development and infrastructure, as well as unfunded mandates that Washington mandates on Guam. You know, Senator Cruz is a strict constitutional conservative. He believes that all parts of the constitution apply in Guam, that we can't just selectively apply the constitution when Washington chooses to do so."

And of course, Cruz is hoping to win the Guam GOP delegation's votes, with Lennox saying, "We've been humbled and honored to receive the support we've received thus far, and we're looking forward to earning every single vote. Because again, Guam matters - Senator Cruz knows Guam matters. And we're looking forward to campaigning heavily between now and the caucus here in Guam in March."

Perhaps an encouraging note for Senator Cruz is that when Lennox looked through the local phonebook, he saw there are a lot of other Cruzes here.

Don’t anybody tell Congressman Hank Johnson about this. He will say if Cruz takes too many votes from Guam, the entire island might just tip over and capsize!!!

Cruz covers all the bases. Excellent. I would bet his representative didn’t call any of them nasty/tacky names as another candidate seems to spit out everyday.

Guam had better be careful about that pivotal roll.

Something like that could make it capsize.

???? Where did this “rule” come from? Most Blue States and most of the territories are WTA while a good chunk of the red states are proportional.
