The Donald Trump bubble, clearly not ready to pop, reminds me that I still haven’t seen how his rise to the top of the polls reveals the trite and biennial “fight for the soul of the Republican Party.”
Surely the GOP isn’t the only party with a soul, but in conventional wisdom, it seems to be the only party that always fights over it. (And apologies if I’ve missed this cycle’s fight-for-the-soul navel gazer; I can’t get to everything.)
Factually speaking, Trump is indeed the new and undisputed GOP front-runner. If he can hold on for a year, give or take, he’s halfway to the job he probably doesn’t want, which is living and working in the White House. Based on his claims, he can’t afford the pay cut.
And while it’s all about him, for now, a smart column I read over the weekend tells me it shouldn’t be. Salena Zito, who writes for the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review, says the Trump phenomenon is real enough, just not about Trump. In this way, she says, the “journalists, pundits and academics” could not be more wrong:
They are looking only at the surface, seeing the response to his harangues as an affirmation of the man. If they looked beyond the cartoonish image of Trump, they would understand that the true disturbance is the frustration of Americans, not the bluster of one man.
The same goes for the surge by Sen. Bernie Sanders of Vermont against Hillary Clinton on the Democrats’ side...

Trump will eschew Oprah and instead, pick Kim Kardashian as his running mate. Despite the serious pay cut, she will take on the task out of love for the country and the knowledge that her rear end will attain its own 4-letter zip code suffix within Washington DC.
It all depends on how quiet he will be over time after he drops out and if he is serious about running as an Indie. I really don’t think he will but wouldn’t be surprised if he did.

I still say Cruz and Trump dump the Republican party and go Independent. Together.
Is there any evidence to suggest that the RNC will allow fair debates and a fair primary process? Are they not still bent on making sure their boy Jeb get the nomination?
If it’s Jeb, we’re through. And that’s whether or not he beats Hillary.
At this point going Independent is a long shot. But a long shot is better than no shot.
It all depends on how much anger he can raise against our crony thieving media.
If he hurts them significantly then he or a conservative can win the election.
If not it will all come to naught.

I agree. When (If?) Trump drops out, Cruz will have large shoes to fill because the Conservative wing of the GOP will not settle for a weakling who reaches across the aisle...unless it’s to slap the face off some Progressive who is lying about something (i.e. their lips are moving).
