GOP's Cruz brings grassroots message to Andover

ANDOVER — Speaking in front of a crowd of roughly 500 people, Republican presidential hopeful Ted Cruz grabbed the attention of the audience from the very start by showing some local flavor.

“Let me start by saying, Tom Brady was framed!” Cruz said. “Now, I’m not willing to pander on much, but on that, Tom Brady was framed!”

The crowd cheered loudly with approval, giving Cruz, the current Texas senator, a warm welcome in his first visit to Massachusetts during his campaign for the GOP’s presidential nomination. After spending the day in New Hampshire Saturday, Cruz held a meet and greet with fans at The Barn at the home of state Rep. Jim Lyons (R-Andover).

Residents from the Merrimack Valley and beyond attended the event, where they listened to Cruz describe his vision for a “country in crisis.”

“The central issue in this next election is reigniting the process of America,” Cruz said. “Getting back to the fundamental idea that our children can live a better life than we did, and their children can live a better life than they did.”

Standing on the steps of The Barn, Cruz outlined his keys for changing the course for American citizens. He stressed job and economic growth, proposing the country adopt a flat tax system in hopes to “abolish the IRS.” He acknowledged during the 1960s, John F. Kennedy Jr. was a proponent of tax cuts, and if he were around today, the popular Massachusetts politician would probably be a Republican.

He urged the crowd to defend their civil liberties, such as their right to religion and to bear arms. He also spoke of the importance of every citizen’s right to privacy, and told those attendances to keep their cell phones on.

“I want to make sure President Obama hears every word we say tonight,” Cruz said.

Since his campaign started, Cruz has made foreign policy one of the forefronts of his platform, particularly his opinions on how to handle terrorist groups such as ISIS. He told the audience to imagine a president who would “stand unapologetically” with Israel, and not allowing countries known to be threats to America to carry nuclear weapons.

According to Cruz, the United States looks much like it did during the late 1970s, when Jimmy Carter was in office. Both Carter and President Barack Obama have adopted poor economic and foreign policies, Cruz said, but despite the parallels, history shows the future will be brighter.

“Now, why does that give me so much hope and optimism? Because we know how that story ended,” Cruz said. “As a result (of the late 1970s), millions of Americans began rising up, a grassroots movement that became the Reagan revolution.”

Cruz spoke for nearly 20 minutes, and throughout his speech, the audience voiced their approval of his messages with applause and shouting. People gathered closely to take pictures of Cruz and his wife, Heidi.

Several Andover High School students attended the event, including Sam Tankel, a senior who will be attending Merrimack College in the fall, where he will major in political science. Tankel said he was “a big fan” of Cruz.

“He really is pro-people, and we both agree on a lot of the same issues,” Tankel said. “I think he’s a great candidate.”

After his speech, Cruz met nearly all of the 500 guests at the event, speaking with them on issues and posing for pictures. Beforehand, however, he reminded the crowd the Republican nomination, as well as positive change in the country, cannot be achieved by him alone.

“I can’t win this race. Heidi can’t win this race. But you can win this race,” Cruz said. “We are building a grassroots movement. That’s how we can turn this country around.”

Are there that many Republicans left in Massachusetts?

Not many Republicans in Massachusetts to be sure. Scott Brown was nominally a Republican, but actually was a RINO. But he was from Massachusetts until he decided to go lose in the New Hampshire senate race.

There is the GOPe for you - losing Senate races in not just one, but TWO states!

Unless I’m confusing it with another recent speech in MA, saw another article where Ted said that Brady was framed...by Hillary Clinton!

And .. this fact alone is probably why the left is hyper-ventilating over everything Cruz.

But, the place where I’m the most disappointed is FOX.
If they show a picture of ALL the repubs, then Cruz is #1 in the list - however, just this morning they were showing the people WHO WERE AHEAD .. and Cruz was nowhere to be found .. which WE KNOW is not true. Cruz is neck-&-neck with Walker - but not on FOX. Shame on them for bowing to the GOPe.

REALLY?

If true, the CRUZ camp should protest the misinformation.

Really!

However, I’ve been watching this for quite a while, and as soon as Cruz was the same or ahead of Walker, they stopped showing his events; or showing him with the lead.

But .. for Cruz to protest is not even remotely his style. He’s going directly to the people .. just like Reagan did. If FOX has an agenda .. that’s their problem .. but they’ve lost me on a lot of their programs that I used to watch. I keep wondering if others are reacting the same, and if it will mean FOX’s ratings will begin to slump a little .. maybe enough to prompt them to not exclude Cruz so much.
