Ted Cruz takes high road in laying out policies

RINDGE, N.H. — Texas Sen. Ted Cruz laughed off his starring role as a “Capitulating Canadian,” dressed up in fighting clothes, in the first attack ad of the 2016 presidential campaign launched by a U.S. Sen. Rand Paul super PAC — and vowed not to retaliate against his Kentucky rival.

“Well, I have to say I chuckled. I’ve never seen myself portrayed as a World Wrestling Federation person, even though I guess it was one that I was not supposed to win,” Cruz told the Herald after a town hall event at Franklin Pierce University last night. “It’s politics. People choose to throw rocks and go into the mud. My consistent pattern is I have no intentions of reciprocating.”

Paul’s super PAC, which legally cannot be coordinated with his campaign, released the ad yesterday ahead of tomorrow’s Senate debate over extending the Patriot Act. The spot depicts Cruz as an accomplice of President Obama in pushing “Big Brother” surveillance. Paul’s campaign has hyped the expected congressional clash as “Spy Showdown Sunday.”

“Sen. Paul is pushing … for letting everything expire, including the tools that are needed to target radical Islamic terrorists and to use them to prevent acts of terrorism,” Cruz said. “I disagree with that as well. We can do both. … It doesn’t have to be Big Brother or law enforcement, national security tools.”

Cruz spoke to about 50 people at Franklin Pierce, sounding familiar themes, including abolishing the IRS and repealing Obamacare. He also blasted Obama’s decision yesterday to remove Cuba from the State Sponsored Terrorist list, equating it with President Clinton doing the same with North Korea in the 1990s.

“President Obama has a policy of saying our enemies are not really our enemies and if we only lay down our arms and embrace in hugs and sing Kumbaya, it will all be better,” Cruz said.

He also argued that the real American divide isn’t between the two parties, but between career Washington politicians and the American people. He asked audience members to raise their hands if they’re fed up with top Republican brass.

“No one is more frustrated with the Republican leadership in Congress than I,” Cruz said. “If you think Washington is fundamentally broken … it’s worse.”

But moments later, an attendee wondered: “Did you vote for (Senate Majority Leader) Mitch McConnell?”

Cruz paused for a few seconds, then replied: “There was not a contested election. … But I think it’s not much of a secret that Mitch McConnell’s sentiments toward me aren’t exactly warm and fuzzy.”

Ron Paul, Jr. may be labeled a Republican, but he, like his daddy, are really Libertarians.

Ron Paul is sleazy and snarky. Like Obama he is not honest about the depth of his Ideology.

Between his campaign coffers and his super pacs, Cruz has plenty of fuel to paint Ron Paul Jr. as a fraud and make him whine. But that money is better spent elsewhere.

Yeah, there is no need for Cruz to waste any of his money on Paul. Paul will self destruct on his own. I think it is telling that Paul supporters felt the need to go after Cruz.

Kicking ass and naming names. Cruze control is certainly a different, pleasantly pleasing ride.
