Texas Sen. Ted Cruz has chosen former Secretary of State Matt Schultz to chair his Iowa campaign in his bid for the Republican Party's nomination for president.

Schultz, who currently serves as the Madison County attorney, supported Sen. Rick Santorum in his failed 2012 presidential campaign, though he won the Republican Iowa caucuses.

"He is a consistent conservative who cares about liberty and won't back down from a fight,"(continued)

Not to be confused with Steve Schmidt, McCain's RINO handler.

A wise choice. Matt Schultz is very highly respected among Iowa conservatives.

I’m beginning to think Cruz is a FR Lurker.
He is avoiding most of the typical GOP traps...like anyone from the McCain camp.

HI TED!

Yeah... Santorum won Iowa. So did Pat Robertson. Cruz has to win New Hampshire. RIght now, I like Walker, but Cruz is definitely my 2nd pick.

Forget New Hampshire. I mean, placing well there would be great, but they’re going to go for the biggest squish standing after Iowa, most likely.

If Cruz places highly in Iowa and South Carolina, he’ll be a force.

Yes, NH does tend to go for the biggest squish... which is why we keep nominating the biggest squish. Cruz has to win in NH. Walker has to win in NH, too, for that matter.

When he ran for Congress in 2012, Matt Schultz was endorsed by Sen. Mike Lee and Tea Party Express.

On the floor of the Senate, however, I intend to press vigorously for a critical amendment to this legislation. At the end of the debate, if this bill is not strengthened, I will have a great deal of difficulty supporting it.

GOOD. he’s talking about the awful Iran congress deal. I love him.

Santorum had a good team, and posted impresseive results. He won quite a few states, not just Iowa. It's a good sign that Ted is hiring someone who understands caucus states. They are very different.

Obama really built his insurmountable lead by winning caucus states, which Axlerod and his team focused on. Her heinousness thought she was inevitable, so didn't have any plan to win them.

It is certainly not done with TV ads.

McCain won New Hampshire in 2000, and Bush won the nomination.

Pat Buchanan won in New Hampshire in 1992, George H.W. Bush's second nomination.

The New Hamshire GOP gave the nod to Henry Cabot Lodge, Jr. over Barry Goldwater in 1964 and to Harold Stassen over eventual nominee Thomas E. Dewey in 1948.

Many GOP candidates have lost New Hampshire and gone on to win the nomination.

A lot of the times New Hampshire picked the nominee there was no competition: 1956, 1960, 1984 and 2004. They picked Reagan twice (so did everyone else) and they picked Nixon for his Re-election, and Eisenhower twice.

In contested races that makes their prognosticating use about 50/50.

This is a wide open race. There are people contesting, there is no incumbent GOP President, there is not a Reagan or Eisenhower type of consensus Republican leader.

I think a top three finish will keep anyone in the race.

Pat Robertson did not win Iowa. He was second, behind Bob Dole. The eventual 1988 nominee, GHW Bush, was third.
