The Democratic Party’s autopsy of its devastating defeat in 2014 calls for a renewed focus on the party’s message and winning back white Southern voters.

In preliminary findings unveiled Saturday at a meeting of the Democratic National Committee, a task force studied the party’s defeats in 2010 and 2014—despite its victories in the 2008 and 2012 presidential years. I know old-line Dems who are as disgusted at their party leadership as certain conservatives are at theirs, and for pretty much the same reason: their national "narrative" is a dreary compendium of outworn talking points that sounded great to a carefully chosen focus group consisting of Beltway policy wonks. In the case of white voters, I can't believe anyone is deaf enough even to ask the question. This has been the most outrageously racially divisive administration in history. From Holder bleating that we're all cowards over race to a steady media and academic drumbeat of White Privilege, White racism, White oppression, and a steady parade of race hucksters such as Wright, Sharpton, Farrakhan, and a steady diet of racist sloganeering such as "Hands up, don't shoot" and "I can't breathe", all the way to the President himself, a "community organizer" who got where he was by encouraging racial animosity, what in the name of Nat Turner is anyone doing even asking the question? "Speaking truth to power" when you're the power is stupid, bullying, hectoring nonsense and the targets are tuning it out. There has been a national narrative: "You're the problem. You should feel guilty and give us money."

There is another one at the moment: inequality of wealth, that old class-warfare socialist bromide that is being treated as if it were shiny new revealed truth. Despite all the organizational money thrown to Occupy Whatever, its only real adherents are people with their hands out and their vocal chords shrieking at...guess who? White middle class taxpayers. Racists. Oppressors. Holders of Privilege. There's a narrative here all right, and it isn't an attractive one.

There is yet another one: the planet is dying, and anyone unwilling to believe it uncritically and cede power to the hucksters is worthy of being imprisoned, literally. We're haters, deniers on the order of Holocaust deniers, evil people who have taken more than their share of the world's resources, which unsurprisingly need to be redistributed along the more equitable lines of world socialism. For some reason the targets of that one are also changing the channel. Wonder why?

The problem isn't the cover story, it's the people telling it, who aren't changing at all, they're the same glib, manipulative liars, cheats, and hate merchants they ever were. They're not going anywhere. They don't need a narrative, they need a boot in the ass.
