Ted Cruz and Elizabeth Warren could still kill the spending bill in the Senate

When Thursday dawned, the conventional wisdom was that House Speaker John Boehner did not have the votes to pass the $1.1 trillion spending bill that would fund the rest of the government for FY2015. But, thanks to lobbying by the White House, the House scrapped up enough votes to pass the measure 219 to 206, according to a Thursday Washington Examiner story. The passage of the bill was a triumph of the establishment wings of both parties. However, Senate passage is by no means certain. Sen. Ted Cruz and Sen. Elizabeth Warren could still scupper the bill between them.

The reason that Cruz and the Tea Party wing of the GOP concerns the fact that the spending bill finances President Obama’s illegal alien executive amnesty order, which many regard as constitutionally dubious at best. The House lost 60 conservative votes because of that aspect of the bill. However, the spending bill should have easily passed had it not been for a revolt by Democratic liberals over provisions that would soften certain provisions of the Dodd-Frank Banking law.

The liberals, led by Sen. Warren, had pushed for a no vote on the bill, whether or not it would have shut down the government or not. The role reversal was curious, considering that many of the same lawmakers had decried Ted Cruz’s efforts to defund Obamacare in 2013, which led to a government shutdown. The irony has been lost of the left, however....

Could be a preview of 2016. We have to be honest here and say that this omnibus is certainly enhancing Elizabeth Warren’s profile, isn’t it? Think Hillary might be gripping a bit now. As for Warren being an opponent in 2016. I know the media will protect her but someone this far left, even more far left than most Democrats, is gonna have a trail of dubious associates and writings that are way out there. Yes, we know that none of that mattered in 2008 but I think after eight years of Hope and Change the Democrat nominee can’t be a way out there lefty or they’ll lose.
