"Finally, after 40 years, our community made history today," Orange County Supervisor Janet Nguyen said on Tuesday night at Azteca Mexican Restaurant in Garden Grove. Nguyen's touching statement came as the Orange County Election Authority showed her leading in the Senate District 34 race at 62 percent of the vote by 10pm, with her Democratic rival Jose Solorio trailing behind at 38 percent.
This is the first time the United States has had a state senator of Vietnamese descent. The state's 34th District includes parts of Long Beach and Orange County.

Janet Nguyen didn’t just pick up a vacant Democrat-held Senate seat, she blew her competition out of the water with 60% in a district that voted for Obama twice.
On a side note, this district roughly covers the same area as the Congressional district represented by Loretta Sanchez. Something on a lot of local Republican minds right now.
I’m assuming she’s a Republican, although it’s difficult to determine from the first couple of sentences.
You noticed that, huh?
She is.
Very Good!
Asians are tired of kowtowing to Blacks and Hispanics especially when it comes to controversial issues like affirmative action. I think there is an opportunity here to slice one minority group away from the Democrats.
She is a Republican, she defeated a Democrat state Assemblyman.
I have noticed MSM always highlights (R) when a mis-deed is involved. But when a non-white republican wins anything, MSM hides the (R).
I am beginning to wonder if MSM hates repubs.
The article is wrong. Since she is a Republican, she must be a white male regardless of other proof.
Asians, on average, have high IQs, smart enough to vote for logical reasons rather than emotional junque. So, good to see this intelligent woman onboard with us.
Golly, the party of wimmin hatin rasus put a Viet woman into office. I wonder when the accusations of being a sellout will start
I no longer wonder if MSM hates Repubs, I know. For them, issuing a nasty public insult to conservatives becomes another bright feather in their caps. Remember Candy Crowley’s unprofessional behavior during the Pres. Debate? She was their Hero of The Week for helping Obama rhetorically trip up Romney.
I’m glad Janet has been elected. I;m surprised it has taken 40 years for a Vietnamese-American to be elected to the State Senate, since many Viet-Amer’s I know are such hard workers.
Under the liberal theology aren’t Asians supposed to Votre democrat? And she’s a Republican? What the heck??
Unfortunately the British press is in the process of destroying the word “Asian” by using it to refer to all the local Pakistani child-molesters.
The Vietnamese people I have met have been industrious, upstanding citizens. Their tendency to lean to the right politically led governor Brown in California to actively work against their immigration in the 70s. I wish we could trade some of these people for what the Obama administration is currently flooding this country with.
My physician for years in FL was Dr. Nguyen. He was really excellent, listened, took all the appropriate measures. Delightful fellow. His wife ran the office. They very quickly became the goto medical office in town.
Nguyen is pronounced “Win,” btw.
Yeah, I didn’t see her identified anywhere in the article as a Republican although her opponent was listed as being a Democrat.
“Unfortunately the British press is in the process of destroying the word Asian by using it to refer to all the local Pakistani child-molesters.”
Brits have always referred to Pakistanis as “Asians,” at least as far back as the 1980s when I was there.
Maybe it’s a local thing, but here in CA, most Vietnamese that I’ve known pronounce their names “N’wen”.
