West Virginia University student Saira Blair (R) will become the youngest person to ever serve in the West Virginia state legislature after getting elected Tuesday.
Blair, an 18-year-old freshman, was elected to the West Virginia House of Delegates from the 59th district after beating her two opponents by a landslide. Blair received more than twice the votes of her main opponent, Democratic Party candidate Layne Dieh.
It was amazing to see that the 59th district had so much faith in me, Blair said shortly after getting the results.
Blair celebrated the victory at Buffalo Wild Wings before heading to the Berkley County Court House and later to Charles Town to celebrate with another newly elected Republican, Alex Mooney, who will take over Shelley Moore Capitos seat in the U.S. Congress.
Blair was just 17 years old when she defeated two-term Republican Del. Larry D. Kump in the primary election in May.
Blair said her main priority in the House will be to create more jobs throughout the state....

Republican or not, who can take an 18yo seriously.
A college kid won an election? Will the legislative session calendar conflict with her class schedule?
I hope the senior state leggies are nice to her once she hits Charleston...I can only image the put downs and other negativity that will come from the liberals down there...
You know what? I am glad to see a young conservative rise up. It helps give me more hope for the political future of our land.
I would believe her vote counts the same as anybodies.
Most likely she will have to drop out of school for the spring sessions.
Marie-Joseph Paul Yves Roch Gilbert du Motier de Lafayette, Marquis de Lafayette was 19 when he came to help us in the Revolutionary War. Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart was Court Musician in Salzburg at 17 and had started composing at age 5.
Drop the create jobs meme, just work on lowering taxes. Shrink government and repeal BarryCare. Do that and the jobs will take care of themselves.
She’ll probably be younger than some of the House pages.
Very nice...Ms Blair...youth are being served in the GOP...(NY elected the youngest congresswomen in history)
sabbatical?
I can only imagine the bad publicity they’ll get if they try that crap.
you mean like the millions of 18 year olds who fought for freedom in 1776,1861,1917,1950,1966,...etc ?
not every 18 yr old is a “party animal”
many of us old fogies here were quite conservative and working hard at 18 years.
As a college student, I cannot fathom any older adult taking someone who is around my age so seriously. Usually, people look for candidates who have actually gone through college, and can at least legally drink. I’m not sure what to make of this.
If she’s smart enough, at 18, to get elected, she will probably surprisingly seasoned in a couple of terms.
Look up the German word Wunderkind.
Isis takes them seriously. The VC took them seriously. And the Nazi bastards did as well.
You'll find some 18 year olds whom you should take seriously.
Normally, I'm uneasy about very young people going into politics. They're usually poli-sci majors (or something similarly useless), and their 'experience' is a bunch of political 'volunteer' resume fluff.
She's studying economics, and worked in the real world, so I give her a break.
Her dad is the State Senator from the district, and that will help
