Ted Cruz says Chris Christie would be 'another Rudy Giuliani' in 2016, report says

Despite calls by party leaders for would-be presidential candidates keep the gloves on, U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) is privately disparaging Chris Christie as the “Rudy Giuliani of this cycle,” to donors, according to a new Politico report that suggests a particularly nasty fight among GOP candidates is brewing even before the start of the 2016 campaign season.

The report, quoting multiple sources, noted that Cruz is making the comparison to potential donors as he tries to expand his appeal beyond conservative Tea Partiers and access the easy campaign cash the flows most readily to those candidates with the highest national profiles. Christie, buoyed by media coverage of Hurricane Sandy and more recently, from his barnstorming tour around the nation’s GOP gubernatorial races as head of the Republican Governors Association, is an obvious target.

But Cruz’s comparison of Christie to Giuliani was no accident, says Patrick Murray, director of the Monmouth University Polling Institute, adding, “There’s an awful lot of coded messages in there.”(continued)

That might be a slight on Giuliani: Rudy might be liberal GOEe, but at least he didn’t toss in the wind, you always knew where he stood on the issues and why. I may disagree with such a man, but I can easily respect him.

Cruz is completely correct. The article is trying to tie it into something sinister about Northeastern Catholics, but Cruz has nailed the underlying problem - Christie is a RINO and he seems like the type who would fold immediately as Giuliani did when the going got tough.

I’d take Cruz over Christie in a nanosecond at this point.

And he successfully cleaned up New York City. What has Gov. Christie done in New Jersey that compares to that?

There are some things I don’t like about Rudy. But on his worst day, he is a couple of orders of magnitude better than Christie.

Rick Perry or Giuliani. Big Talking and open borders.

Christie is only fat and handsome. Nothing else appealing.

I’m the same way about Giuliani. He was way, way too liberal for me to ever vote for national office (especially with his pro-abortion views and weakness on the 2nd Amendment). But he never really ‘toadied’ to the Republican Establishment crowd. I remember when Palin was under insane attack by the media, which was incendiarily trying to place blame for the Tucson murders right on her doorstep, and just about EVERY single Republican leader stood by the sidelines and remained silent like cowardly lambs, Giuliani was one of the only GOP figures who spoke up strongly and defended Palin. Yes, I might have sharp disagreement with some of Guiliani’s views, but I do have a certain respect for him.

Chris Christie, in comparison, is a disgusting, loathesome hack. Who hugs Obama, and cries his heart out over a phone call from Bruce Springsteen. Pathetic beyond words.

Cruz probably just meant to suggest that like Giuliani, Christie has more media than popular support, and is too light on conservative principles to wkin the Republican presidential nomination. The dark insinuations of anti-Catholicism are gratuitous but unsurprising, both because of Cruz’s outspoken preacher dad and his hailing from Texas, a state liberals love to portray as a nest of intolerance.
