GOP presents ethnic faces to California voters

The push to elect the Asian-American women is part of Republican efforts to tap into Democrat-style identity politics to try to find a way to stop — or even reverse — its eroding support among minority voters.

“California is a precursor of the dynamic change, demographicswise, in America,” said Shawn Steel, a member of the Republican National Committee from California whose wife, Michelle, is one of the candidates. “So this is a harbinger. This is a call in the dark night saying, ‘Look, guys, let’s change. We have to adapt or die.’”

In the state that controls the single biggest pot of electoral votes, Wayne Lindholm, president of the Lincoln Club of Orange County, which has served as a rich source of funds for Republicans over the years and whose members have included Richard Nixon and John Wayne, summed up the party’s challenge more bluntly: “We need to break the image of being just old, white guys.”

The candidates cleared the first hurdle in the primary last month.

Michelle Steel, a Korean-American, came out as the top vote-getter in a race for a seat on the Orange County Board of Supervisors, and Ling-Ling Chang, a Chinese-American, came out as the top vote-getter in the race for a state Assembly seat — giving each a boost of momentum heading into the November elections, where Republicans expect them to win.

Meanwhile, Young Kim, a Korean-American and former staffer for Rep. Edward R. Royce, moved forward in the race for a state Assembly seat, and Janet Nguyen, a Vietnamese-American and Orange County supervisor, advanced in her race for the state Senate, which is being billed as one of the hottest statehouse races in California this year.

The author tries to make it sound like this was intentionally done in the backroom, when these ladies were the top vote-getters.

Nothing new. It has been difficult to tell what country you were in, in California, for decades.

Good to see this happening.

Where did this stereotype come from, that ethnic minorities should be Democrat?

It should be made clear that, the GOP welcomes all who believe in conservative values. You don’t have to be white to believe in conservative principles. And Democrats don’t do much for minorities when they are in power. Witness the conditions of so many cities, with big minority population, which have been governed by Democrats for decades.

The California Republican Party is trying to respond to the changing demographics by adapting in terms of candidate recruitment. If these candidates and others win their elections, it could be a role model of candidate recruitment for future elections in other parts of the country.

The big race there is in state Senate district 34. Incumbent Democrat Lou Correa of Santa Ana tried to start a Blue Dog caucus and got punished by his party’s leadership and now he’s term-limited. Republican Orange County Supervisor Janet Nguyen and Democrat Assemblyman Jose Solorio are duking it out and both parties are making it their top priority. In the open primary, Nguyen finished so far ahead, she surprised even her own party, but Solorio has far more money and is saving it for October and November. It could go either way.

Tribal politics. If the GOP buys into this approach, they will lose in the long run.

The GOP brand has been eroding with minorities for decades because for decades the democrats have no problem with gross stereotyping, smears & character assassination. Its how they win.

The GOP should advocate mass Eastern European immigration from Ukraine, Belarus and Russia if they think that immigration is a good thing.

These are real refugees that the Americans have common cause with.

And Shawn Steel is a maroon who keeps on losing.

Republican efforts to tap into Democrat-style identity politics

I guess this gives a certain South Carolina U.S. Senator cover to visit San Francisco bathhouses: candidate recruitment.

You do have an eye for the ladies, I see. Hopefully the American public will be seeing more of them in the coming years.

Memo to the California GOP and the Republican National Committee a RINO in any color is still unacceptable and a formula for continuous losses in local, city, county, state and national elections.

“We need to break the image of being just old, white guys.”

Because there is something so inherently vile in being old, white and male.

Nothing wrong with it. The thing is - in politics, you roll with the punches. As Irish, Italian and Jewish immigrants became important constituencies, the Democrats recruited and groomed Irish, Italian and Jewish candidates to cater to those constituents.

Good. Conservatives need to see that this a good, not a bad, thing.
