Tea party could spoil GOP chances
The Charleston Post and Courier / The Washington Post ^ | July 11, 2014 | Michael Gerson

Posted on 07/10/2014 9:36:42 PM PDT by 2ndDivisionVet

A few recent developments have revealed the tea party temperament in its most distilled, potent form.

Former Republican vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin called for the impeachment of President Obama on the theory that his border policies are "the last straw that makes the battered wife say, 'no mas.' " Excavating the layers of mixed metaphor - the straw that broke the camel's back is somehow causing an abused woman to surrender in Spanish - Palin demands the ousting of an American president on the constitutional theory that "enough is enough."

Republicans who disapprove of this plan, according to Palin, lack "cojones" and true conservatives should "vehemently oppose any politician on the left or right who would hesitate in voting for articles of impeachment." Opponents are identified not just by disagreement (and by a lack of male sex glands) but by hesitation. In adopting the succession practices of a banana republic, and in elevating Vice President Biden to power, those who are reflective and deliberative are natural enemies.

At the same time, failed tea party Senate candidate Chris McDaniel claims that his primary opponent, Thad Cochran, "stole" the election - a serious charge made without serious evidence - and equates overturning his 7,700-vote loss with preserving "the torch of liberty." Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, has embraced McDaniel's legal challenge, blaming the "D.C. machine" for shifting the election results.....

these people exist alternative universe. Ignore all the fact, and just constantly spin for the left. McDaniel won the primary and then got hosed in the runoff through a despicable race-bating, pay-for-votes scheme. He’s just a ‘failed’ candidate when you leave out what actually happened.

The headline reflects the yacht racing mentality of politics. Never go off on your own tack. Stick close to the opponent. It may be the best chance in yacht racing, but the Republicans are not going to cover the Democrat’s breeze.

Don’t you love getting advice from the enemy? You just now they have our best interests at heart, right?

Shocked the PDS Brigade here hasn’t launched their volley yet. Of course most seem tied up on impeachhment threads not of the Palin variety opposing it there.

Funny how its most often the same people isn’t it?

The big Romneybots/anti fencers/immigration moderates/anti impeachers and PDSers...all one big happy family.

Always opposite of the FR position on things...But don’t dare question their conservatism.

I’ll bet Gerson stays awake all night worrying about the GOP’s chances in November! Nah.

The GOP, and only the GOP, can hurt their chances for a landslide victory in Congress this year.

And you can be sure they’re making every effort to do just that...

I'm supposed to worry about spoiling the chances of one of the liberal parties? Cry me a river!

And those who don't share a preference for maximal (sometimes delusional) solutions - those who talk of incrementalism or compromise - are granted particular scorn.

For the simple reason, Mr. Gerson, that those who talk of incrementalism or compromise are seeking to drain the swamp of liberalism with a teacup.

It is because incrementalism and compromise are what got us where we are -- on the verge of a fascist state. And if you have no problem with where we are, then you are part of the problem.

I think that is a former Bush speech writer and a hater of Palin.

I’m expecting voter fraud to be ten times worse in November than it was in 2012. The commie ‘RATS can’t allow the GOP to take over both the House and the Senate. Too many ‘RATS would be finding their asses in prison.

I don't care about the GOP's chances.

I care about America's chances.

The GOP wants to lose, if the GOP loses they can always blame the tea party, if the GOP wins they can also lukewarmly thank / backhanded insult the tea party.

The GOP isn’t acting very conservative or patriotic as of late. I think Obama asked for 4 billion instead of the 2.4 billion he originally asked for on the border crisis so he could stuff pockets. The GOP seems to have turned tail and given in to his demands and that could explain a lot. I think the taxpayers are getting raped like they’ve never been raped in history.

They know that if they win they’ll be blamed for everything and the democrats will win everything in 2016. But the simple fact is they’ll be blamed because they’ll be to blame for not doing what needs to be done.

Tea party could spoil GOP chances

Incorrect headline. Try this:

GOP spoiling chances by turning on its base

The old guard don’t want to win if they’re not the ones running the show. It’d be like McArthur ordering his troops to do bayonet charges at the enemy as his final order before Truman fired him.

McConell could have stepped aside as leadership and undercut Bevin by showing he realized he failed. Cochran is really running as a placeholder for Barbour’s legacy. He could have stepped down and given Mississippi a fresh new face they widely support instead of clinging onto the seat he feels is his and Barbour’s.
