The Supreme Courts decision to let the core elements of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act stand kicks the fate of the Obama administrations signature initiative where it properly belongsinto the domain of politicswhere a Romney administration would still have ample opportunity to dismantle the main elements of the law.
One thing President Romney probably couldnt do, however, would be the politically expedient step of simply repealing the legally controversial and politically unpopular fine levied on people who decline to purchase health insurance. Both Romney (who embraced a mandate as governor of Massachusetts) and Obama (who opportunistically opposed a mandate when running against Hillary Clinton) understand the basic issue here. Requiring insurance companies to accept all customers and charge the same price regardless of their state of health (guaranteed issue and community rating in wonk-speak) are popular but unworkable ideas. If people can buy insurance only after they get sick, then there isnt enough money coming into the system to cover the bills of the people who are sick.
Thats why even the Obama administration told the Supreme Court that if they struck down the mandate, the guaranteed issue and community rating provisions should go as well. The court did have the option of being devious, and simply kicking the dilemma of what to do with a mandateless market back to the White House. But a future Romney administration would have to internalize the consequences of stripping the mandate and thus would be unlikely to try to isolate it.
This is where Democrats may come to rue the day that they decided to delay implementation of the main parts of their signature initiative all the way until 2014...

A conservative president could do it..Romney cant and wont
Romney says he will “repeal and replace” Obamacare on his first day in office. I simply wonder how he will repeal it and with what will he replace it? Or is it simply a campaign slogan meant for the mind numbed Republican voters?
I wonder why everyone is nervous about whether romney will actively seek to repeal obamascare.
It’s a quick and dirty way of saying that he doesn’t agree with the ruling. But yes, I would like to know just what exactly he intends to replace it with.
Romney has said what he will do, and he will probably do it, but calling what happened today anything but politics is nonsense. It doesn’t get anymore political with all the partisan judges voting their politics, and the typical Republican type compromising with the left. Once again, the American people got gypped.
Romney *might*
Obama won’t.
I hate it. But that is the choice.
There is another choice - represent conservatism or lose your power.
Romney is a good man, but he will not out and out repeal O’Care. At his core he’s a mushy moderate at best. And he won’t have a Republican dominated Senate to help him repeal it.
Five years from now the 1,000 arm tick we know as Obamacare will still exist. Even if Romney wins the presidency the dozens of panels and committees designed to implement O’Care will still exist. The thousands of new IRS agents hired to enforce it will still be there. NOTHING serious will change. Republicans will talk about repeal but the infrastructure already in place will remain in place. There won’t be a single time during a Romney presidency when Romney announces that he or anyone else has shut down and removed ANY aspect of the gov’t machine put in place by Progressives. Nothing will be categorically eliminated. It simply will not happen.
Sorry, but the Progressive Army of Political Ticks has now embedded itself so far into our system that nothing will fix it. Romney and Republicans will nibble at the edges, as they always do, but 10, 15, 20 years from now every single American will still be contending with Obamacare or it’s bureaucratic legacy.
What idiot believes this??? He can NOT scrap it. He WILL not scrap it. This is a fool’s errand. But hey, there will be enough Conservatives who will continue to play the whipping boy for the GOP elite. How has that worked out for ya so far?
If the left continues to be dominant 10 years from now onwards, then there will be way too many problems for the entire U.S., as a country, (or whatever it will be called, instead), to, even, keep accurate track of it all! “Detroit” would of gone national, with no end in sight! The U.S. would become a third world, socialistic country, possibly, for always!
And don’t, even, try to vote, in the non-left majority, for, either, Virgil Goode of the Constitution Party, or Tom Hoefling of America’s Party! Non-leftists have a true way out of this mess, but they are way too into the ongoing religion of “voting for the lesser of two evils” to, actually, vote any other way, other than to, either, write-in a favorite conservative, “blank” the ‘12 POTUS/VPOTUS spot on the ballot, or stay at home and not vote at all this November!
There is another choice - represent conservatism or lose your power.
And what power might that be?
I don’t like it anymore than the next conservative. But pining your hope on beating Obama with someone other that Romney is a sure fire way to loose at this point.
I was a ABR guy. I still am, however, this time around I see no other option to stop obama.
I am not happy with this at all.
If somehow they manage to kick Romney to the curb in Miami and replace him with a conservative you will get no complaints from me.
Sorry.. I won’t be staying home. To many down ticket races to vote in.
Michele needs my vote. I am in MN 6.
By not helping RINOS stay in office, each of those RINOS loses his/her personal hold on power. By lowering the total number of Republican party members in Congress, the party loses some of it's power. By losing State Legislatures and Governorships, the party loses it's power at the State level.
Do you feel better when a liberal bill passes with a few RINO crossover votes than when it is a straight party line vote with fewer on the Republican side? I say it's worse - they can claim "bi-partisian" with the RINO votes.
Alright.. Just so we are clear.
I’ll vote for Romney. My wallet is closed to him.
I said I was going to vote down ticket for people like Bachmann. Hardly a Rino.
I did not come to the choice of voting for Romney easily. If you want to beat Obama give me another way of doing it.
If he's not worth your wallet, why is he worth your vote? You must decide this in a way that allows you to lay your head on your pillow each night.
If you want to beat Obama give me another way of doing it.
I want to promote Conservatism. It is not just one election to me. I understand that we as a country may be heading for some hard times, but I will work to help Conservatism prevail.
Making this all about Obama is not the correct long term view in my mind. Sometimes we lose the war with "the enemy of my enemy is my friend" tactics because in the compromises we lose ourselves.
Conservatives who are not 100% behind Romney are abandoning their conservatism and will help keep ObamaCare.
Dah? Obama.
That’s why Rush, Levin, Palin, and Reagan, in his grave, support Romney. The grownups will get Romney Elected! It’s Romney vs Obama. Who’s better for America?
You’re Right.
Romney has already promised to repeal on day one.
HOW?
Itll take super majorities in both houses months just to go Find all the buried Funding roots of this atrocity before they can write the Bill to send Romney.
Executive Order? Even IF Willard had the guts, And the Arrogance, he wouldnt know Where all the little pieces of it Are. And even if he Did, do we want to get into an Executive Order Tyranny? We do it, then They do it, and Congress gets left out? Making Laws becomes the business of the day to day whims of the President?
That is Banana Republic. Marry your daughter off to El Generalisimo who saved you from the previous El Generalisimo.
Romney is yanking Everybodys chain. Hes the same, Lying Blowhard that Jim and everyone else here have been Warning us about for ages.
We’ll be playing ice hockey with Satan before Romney repeals this mess on day one, and it annoys me no end to see so many people fall for it just because he’s Not Obama.
Yeah, gee, I wonder why?
