OUR OPINION: Decision day looms for Sarah Palin
The Sioux City Journal ^ | August 16, 2011 | The Editors

Posted on 08/16/2011 9:16:09 PM PDT by 2ndDivisionVet

Turns out she didn't try the fried butter after all. But there was plenty of waffling to go around when 2008 Republican vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin visited the Iowa State Fair on Friday.

Upon arrival, Palin immediately headed to the livestock barns and the media cattle call ensued. Were there more cameras than cows? Maybe not (this is the state fair after all), but the scene was surreal.

Palin and her husband, Todd, feigned amusement and surprise that the "lamestream" media was making such a spectacle of her return to the Hawkeye State. She merely accepted an invitation to visit, she maintained. Never mind that she fired up her idled bus tour just a day before the biggest political event of the year so far - the Iowa Straw Poll.

And she did talk politics. A lot. She spoke to everyone from Journal Des Moines reporter Mike Wiser to Jake Tapper of ABC News and journalists from the influential website Politico. In nearly every conversation, she criticized President Obama. When asked what Americans were looking for in the next president, she described a candidate that looks remarkably like a certain former Alaska governor.

Was she buttering up potential caucus goers or simply taking the opportunity to seize some of the spotlight? We don't know. But it is interesting to hear Iowa Republican Party Chairman Matt Strawn raise doubts and point out that he sees no evidence of a Palin organization that could be ready to compete in the caucuses.

Friday's visit is nothing new, though, for Palin. She clearly enjoys the attention and clearly takes delight in bashing the president, the media and "the establishment." And we in the media make it easy for her, following her everywhere and reporting every syllable she utters.

Iowans will quickly grow tired of this act if Palin doesn't make her intentions clear soon. She told the media throng a decision will come sometime in September or October. We'd like to see an earlier timetable, but today we will settle for simply encouraging Palin to be a woman of her word and let us know where she stands.

So far, her track record on promises here appears mixed. She nixed the fried butter and opted for corn dogs instead. But we won't hold that against her just yet.

Not an easy decision to put your family through such an ordeal of constant media hatred. She’s wise to take her time to decide.

I would love to see her President, but voters are not what they use to be. Common sense is lacking. People can be manipulated by the MSM.

Sarah has considerable power without being President. Maybe she will choose to remain a strong voice on the sidelines without putting her family through rabid political abuse. They mean more to her than the White House, I’m sure.

Here’s the dirty little secret:

The media follow Palin because PEOPLE WANT TO KNOW everything Palin.

Now tell me ‘who’ is really in control in terms of deciding WHEN to announce?

I'm less convinced now than I was after 2008 that she will definitely run.

I think she is watching things shake out...either Bachmann or Perry get a commanding lead consistently then I'm not sure she would want to steal their potential for her own limelight..or ego.

She could endorse....

People keep talking Reagan 79.. Lord Maximus was robbed by Yankee Rinos..when he ran for POTUS 4 years earlier, had apparatus firmly in place...no one doubted he would run...I was there...my first support of a righty...a righty that as a hippie I had been culturally educated to hate...it was a given...he had been waiting for his day preparing to thwart the RINOs this time

Sarah just isn't giving the same signals nor has the same history...McCain's former folks are not her’s....they are moderates..her PACs which I donate to might help

it's just different...she will not control most state GOP leadership by a long shot...most are more centrist...sadly..so where are her guns...the Tea Party...maybe...but they like Bachmann too

I hope she does...I would sure prefer her over this morning's frontrunner Perry...but I don't know...I was convinced up till recently

even though zealots here will scold me otherwise I'm not sure waiting it out this season is so smart

Look...say Bachmann gets lucky and really moves ahead...will she want to come in by October and then duke it out with her...or even Perry whom she campaigned large for?

it helps when frontrunners fight against one another with more conflict of ideology...the line between these 3 is much less than say tween Reagan and Ford or Reagan and Bush I

I have never seen a GOP primary with 3-4 near the top of the potential heap that are within my general view as a right wing white southern boy..Gods, Guns, Babies, Guts...and then count the next tier

Bachmann, Palin...then Perry...then Cain and Santorum

Romney is the only real turd in the punch bowl

it's amazing....is it because I'm older now but does no one else see that we have a better shot at an FR acceptable candidate now than anytime since 1984...none are perfect but just sit back and gauge the tenor of our movement(s) that has given us this chance aside from Romney...beat Romney and any of these are the best since Magnus the Great

Well, some folks will call me a sell-out, if they wish, but come Nov. of 2012, I’m gonna vote for the Republican nominee, no matter WHO it is. I don’t think this country can survive another four years of Obama.

We need a outsider like Palin who has a reputation of putting people of her own party in jail.

And that little item is precisely why the establishment pukes of both parties have been running their ABP campaign 24/7 since August 29, 2008.

Wardaddy, If one really reads up on Palin, and follows everything Palin (here), you will very easily see that she 'is' running. Now, be patient, and be ready. Politics is a 'ruthless' sport, but you need to wage a smart 'war' to win. Play 'nice' to win, not just to 'play nice'. Our rules will be governed by Sun Tszu's 'The Art of War'.

Our rules will be governed by Sun Tszu's 'The Art of War'.

You win the trophy.

My guess is she reads it constantly.

All war is deception and this is war. You hide your intent and plans from the enemy. You fight on ground of your choosing and under terms most favorable to you. You remain calm and listen to your inner voice of counsel.

The successful general controls with grand strategy and is not controlled by the actions of others.

I believe she also reads the 33 Strategies of War by Robert Greene. It not only covers the wisdom of Sun Tzu, but the strategies of Napoleon, Hannibal, Julius Caesar, Ulysses S. Grant and MANY others.

It is one of the finest pieces of strategy I have ever read.

It brings the great strategies of history into direct application to our own daily conflicts of life.

The book even details how Alfred Hitchcock used grand strategy to control the films he made.

The way Mae West came to Hollywood and took control of a film, in which she played a very small role, was an amazing clinic on strategy included in the book. An overweight and aging actress, with no prior movie acting experience, launched a new career using brilliant strategy against experienced movie executives who underestimated her.

One of Sarah Palin's best weapons is her worst enemies ALWAYS underestimate her, to their woeful regret.

A failure to act as anticipated is unnerving to your enemies. You always try to act outside of your enemy's experience.

History has consistently shown a surprise flanking attack is often successful.

Speed and surprise are great tools of war.

Sarah Palin is a brilliant strategist.

Huh? As if that hasn’t been happening for the past couple of years ANYWAY? How could it get worse? The media’s already on a 24/7 “destroy anything Palin!” rampage, and has been since ‘08.

Actually, I saw her in an interview say that she’ll make an announcement in September, because she didn’t want it to seem like she was stringing people along.

Thanks for the info. I had a feeling she didn't say October.

TA-DA! The winner!

That is exactly what this nation needs as Congress and the fed-gov is packed with corruption and un-prosecuted active criminal activity.

I do not see ANY of the other candidates getting into office and starting investigations on both "sides."

Gov. Palin would be the only one to even pose that threat.

Covert Operative gets a gold star...

NCLA, you 'get it'. I would want you in the informal 'war room when the word is sent out. The moment is fast approaching. God speed!

It could get worse. She’s bashed in the media now but not to the degree it would get being the actual candidate to dethrone Obama/Democrats.

She does have to consider the effect on her family and rightfully so.

My gut tells me none of the other candidates you mention are as trustworthy as Palin. Not even close.

Trustworthiness is the most important quality and the rarest. Perry and Bachmann can talk about conservative principles on the campaign trail till they’re blue in the face.

But only Palin has proven over and over she will do the right thing even at great personal risk.

Iowans think way too much of themselves and their importance in selecting candidates.

Strawn is right. Organize 4 Palin has been working their hears out here for months. They send their people to every county central committee meeting and picnics, etc. but they seem not to be attracting huge numbers of supporters for Palin.

If they are effective, there would have been more than 35 write-in votes for Palin at the SP.
