Maureen Dowd: Myth and Madness [Weak tea attacks on Christine O'Donnell's beliefs]
The New York Times ^ | September 18, 2010 | Maureen Dowd

Christine O’Donnell is in a fantasy world. Literally.

The pretty Palin Mini-Me identifies with the women of Middle Earth, comparing herself to the female characters in the “Lord of the Rings” novels by J. R. R. Tolkien.

“Look at the significance that he gives to Eowyn, the Lady of Rohan,” O’Donnell said on C-Span in 2003. “She was a warrior spirit and, to me, that’s who I love. I mean, I aspire to be soft and gentle like Arwen, but realistically, I’m a fighter, like Eowyn.”

O’Donnell said she liked Tolkien’s outlook on gender: “On the one hand, there’s the attitude that’s normally on the conservative side — as a conservative woman, I feel I can say this — that stifles women. There’s almost the stereotypical attitude of, to be a true woman, you have to stay at home. And I’ve actually had people say to me, ‘Why do you choose a career over marriage?’ Honestly, I’ve had only a few significant relationships, and they’ve broken up with me. And one of the things I’ve been told is, ‘If you weren’t so strong, you’d be married by now.’ ”

This anti-abortion, anti-masturbation, anti-premarital-sex, anti-stem-cells, anti-gay-marriage, dubious-about-evolution Christian conservative has rocked politics by snatching the Delaware Republican nomination for the Senate away from the seemingly sure-thing moderate Mike Castle.

At the Values Voter Summit here on Friday, the 41-year-old O’Donnell cited another fantasy world to conjure up a Christlike image for the Tea Party.

“We’re rowdy, we’re passionate,” she told the enraptured crowd...

I believe the rules are still in effect. (And if not, who's going to argue?)

"Christine O’Donnell is in a fantasy world. Literally."

the shrewish MoDo wishes desperately to be in a fantasy world, b/c in the real world she is always the tedious loser who's hating CZJ or..... Christine O'Donnell.

At least she reads good Christian fantasy novels not the Satanic type. Her brush with Satanic forces when she went out on that date was probably an education. She will be battling the forces of Satan in the Senate and she probably knows that.

I’m sure the Left thinks that will turn off them “Tea Party Bitter Clingers” and that no one will vote for her. Trouble with them is that many of them have no conception of Christianity and only know what their fellow leftists say about it (Priest scandals, televangelists, snake handlers, holy rollers, Family Guy, etc...)

This is the best they can come up with, statements from 1990 and 2003, if she is so unelectable, why are they so scared?

Their problem. No matter what they say she is not a Democrat and not a Liberal. And that is a winner.

Know who else talked about brushes with the occult? G.K. Chesterton and C.S. Lewis. We are just in a decadent society where people will have that experience now, just as the intellectual brits did in the 1930’s.

When it comes to REAL "snake handlers" I know almost anyone has ever met one. There aren't very many of them ~ yet ~ we had a snake dealer in this community who let some of his black mambas get loose (fortunately in winter) and the cops confiscated his entire collection.

He was breeding them, and rattle snakes, and copper heads, for sale to hillbillies and others from India!

There's more than one kind of "snake handler".

Some day The Times will close, or they will let MoDo go, and then she will just have her cats and vodka.

Perhaps Miss Dowd is unaware the Socrates and Plato took the ideas of Homer’s fantasy world very seriously. Jesus took the Old Testament seriously too. It’s funny how the “intellectuals” takes only their own ideas seriously; and they are the ones that claim they have an open mind. Miss Dowd’s column’s indicate she has an empty mind.

Michael Douglas is not lucky ... Michael Douglas is dying a slow and miserable death, and without hope or interest in salvation.

I just knew Dowd would join in on the Palin-O’Donnell LSM bash fest! Dowd is so bitter towards happy, successful, beautiful conservative women!

“without hope or interest in salvation”

How do you judge the state of a man’s soul from such a distance?

I did hear about his cancer, but thought he had a pretty good chance at beating it. Prayers you are right though. I am pretty sure that Michael Douglas is Catholic. In fact, I saw Catherine in an interview saying that they go to mass every Sunday. Not saying that is the only key to getting into Heaven, but we don’t know what he is thinking either.

A fan of Lord of the Rings & Eowyn. Wow, she certainly has my vote.
