SoCalPundit.com endorsed Fred Thompson for the Republican nomination not because he was the candidate raising the most money or the candidate with the most name recognition (though in a national election I think he would) but because he is the true conservative candidate in the GOP field. All due respect to Alan Keyes of course.
After a shaky start to a late campaign, it looked like Fred was dead in the water. But a Google search for the candidate today reveals some indication that Fred is catching up in Iowa and other early primary states where Fred must make a stand.
Many are attributing the sea change to Freds performance at the otherwise crappy Iowa debate and campaign propaganda like his apology to Huckleberry and the rest of the Republican field.
Then there is this editorial from National Review and scores of blogger endorsements (see here and here for examples). But I think the most convincing aspect of Fred Thompsons electability is his stance on immigration. Its pure meat and potatoes for the conservative base that hell need if he is to be the nominee.
Reasons for Fredmentum that warrant honorable mention:
Thompson: No Habeus Corpus for Gitmo Prisoners
Endorsement by Iowa Republican Congressman Steve King (Thompson must make a good showing in Iowa if he is to be taken seriously in later contests)
His wife Jeri Thompson
The amount of ‘chatter’ about Fred this week has been monumental when compared to the past. And it all began with his appearance at the Iowa debate.
Suddenly he’s picking up meaningful endorsements (at least meaningful regionally such as Steve King). Suddenly even people like Evans & Novak are writing about him. Now speculation has Tancredo dropping out of the race and, naturally, that speculation centers around who he’ll endorse. Thompson? It could be what with Steve King being a close friend of Tancredo.
When Fred said after King’s announcement that “more’s to come” (or words to that effect), was he speaking of Tancredo? Or is Tancredo just one of more we can expect? Time will tell. But one thing isn’t debatable; there’s momentum to be seen.

I don't agree with Fred on every single thing, but only one person meets that test--and I ain't on the ballot.
I could see Tanc endorsing Fred.
In fact...I bet Tanc is talking to Fred right now to make sure he’s good and serious about his immigration plan (which Tancredo could have written...)
Then he’ll drop out and endorse the WINNER in this race. Hunter should do the same.
I have noticed the same thing.
I also understand there has been some considerable internal dissent regarding NR’s endorsement (read: KLo’s school girl crush on) Romney by some of the more serious thinkers there, generally in favor of Thompson.
This would be my guess but tomorrow will tell. Too many crazy things have been happening lately to make a full-blown prediction.
In any event, we SHOULD have one less contender. That’d be at least a mini-step in the right direction.
I’ve seen some NRO nitpicking, but have taken it with a grain of salt. They’ve made their ‘official’ announcement. Any internal stuff beyond that is just chatter.
Time will tell, but things seem to be shaping up differently than we could predict just a couple weeks ago.
Dont really care(putting it very mildly) for the DEMOCRATIC... POPULIST ...WORLD AFFAIRS IGNORANT.....LIBERAL LEANING... PAROLING GIVING... WELFARE STATE MINDED...AMNESTY SUPPORTING....MORE GOVERNMENT CONTROL FREAK.... PREACHER HICK FROM ARKANSAS,
..........although he is the best DEMOCRAT running.
Dont know if I said that right.
OOPS...I forgot.. BUSH BASHER and ANTI-AMERICAN
“Saddle Me Up” - GO FRED.
Too bad we can’t get McCain to drop out and endorse Fred.
I’m willing to bet it will eventually come to that..
There was speculation on another thread of Rudy, who's campaign is stumbling, dropping out (in the near future) then endorse McCain. That's a scenario I can see. But I really can't see McCain dropping out. He's too self-serving. And this is his last chance.
Oh, I know the same could be said for Rudy. But the timing is different. The closer we get to the primaries, the bigger the falls become.
Fred in ‘08
In addition to Mcfudge, get Mitt and Guiliani to drop out.
Thompson / Hunter '08
John McCain has put everything his campaign has into New Hampshire. If he doesn’t finish well, he’ll have to drop out, if for no other reason, than a lack of funds.
Now, NH has very lax rules about identification and who can vote in the primary. There’s another candidate who’s betting big on NH and that’s Ron Paul.
If Ron Paul were to win NH, and McCain finished 3rd behind Flopney, all of the talk would be about Ron Paul’s amazing victory and cheating allegations, etc. It would force McCain out.
Strangely, I see this scenario playing out. We’ll have to see. But, NH is tailor made for Paul supporters to mess with.
Tanc was my second choice. If he does drop out, I hope he throws his support to Fred.
I hear Jeri today on Hannity and she was GREAT! I was impressed, she sounded intelligent, presented her points well....and nicely...and with great enthusiasm. She really is an asset.
HEARD, not hear
