QUOTE FOR THE DAY II:
"The issue in advancing newsroom diversity is that you have to get people into gate-keeper roles. You have to force your hiring managers to find talent and demand that every pool of applicants for any job includes at least one woman and one minority." - Arthur Sulzberger Jr., on how he imposes racial preferences in every single job at the paper (except his own), August 8, 2002.

IMO, it's not at all about the actual advancement of the position of minorities and women. It's about the APPEARANCE of the advancement of minorities and women.
If people really want to improve themselves and prove their worth, they need to become Conservatives. :o)

When President Bush first came out with the phrase "The soft bigotry of low expectation" it went right to my heart. It put into one phrase what I have long believed.
By constantly telling people that they are not good enough to get ahead, unless some liberal made it possible, they are crippling entire generations. I can't tell you how made it makes me.

That quote is enough to make me cry. This President "gets it". He knows that people don't make more of themselves because they are forced to. It has to come from within to feel that sense of pride and self worth that most successful people have.
There was a time and a place for this. It has long since passed.

Howell Raines apologists led us to believe this situation occurred because JB was so special...so abnormally good.
This quote makes it very clear that Raines considered the newsroom a puzzle ... and Jayson was the answer to 1 Across.
Good job by Andrew Sullivan (one of my favorite writers), and good catch! Thanks for the ping.

You're welcome. I wish I could take credit, but I have a dear friend that pointed me to this item. I thought it was so good it deserved a thread of it's own.

Rush mentioned Walter Duranty today, said Pinch has his job only because his family owns the paper, Raines is the brains of the operation and Pinch will never fire him.
Wonder what the family thinks of Pinch's troubles?

After all this protecting, there is a reason that the NYT is now throwing JB to the wolves. This is being done very publicly.
There are undoubtedly several other skeletons in the closet that they don't want unburied. By keeping the attention focused on the one bad child, very loudly, they are hoping nobody is noticing, or looking for, the rest of the story...so to speak.

Consider this. The WP is writing critical articles about the NYT. The circulation numbers are down. The paper is mocked and derided in most major news outlets. Even the lib employees are unhappy. The family can't be TOO thrilled!
If Pinch is lucky, Raines will allow him to remain as Owner. LOL.

They are in the awkward position of having to air their dirty laundry in public. There is a paper trail of Email and Memo's showing that some members of management knew the extent of the problem, but the three guys at the top ignored them. Faced with saving them or the plagarist, it's no contest.

Just watched Nightline. The media wants to limit the discussion to Affirmative Action and good intentions gone bad. Waiting for someone on TV to mention the paper's history of lying.

Did Nightline address the other two reporters under investigation?

Gee, who would have thought that judging people by the color of their skin instead of the content of their character would backfire like that...[/sarcasm]
