I had to go back to the new Erta Ale site at Stromboli On-Line for this picture. It's of an area called the
Dallol Hot Springs. Here's the description from the site:
"Geologically, Dallol is a most remarkable place: Situated in the Danakil depression, it is nearly 120 meters below sea level. Below a salt lake is a substantial source of volcanic heat which causes hot water to rise through layers of salt and anhydrite deposits. Minerals get dissolved and are deposited, near the springs, and form shapes very much reminiscent (but smaller than) hornitos on basaltic lava flows. Sulphur, other minerals and possibly thermophyle bacteria cause spectacular colours."
In the image above, it's particularly interesting to view the "aging" of the deposited sulfur.

is there a url that gives the geology picture of the week--or do you just surf the net for a cool pic and post here at free republic from time to time.
If there is a url--would you post it.
I figure it would go well with
NASA Picture of the Day.

well do a picture a day and provide the urlOne, if I did that it'd be too much like work and not as much fun; two, I don't have enough time to search the Web for new and interesting pictures every day; three, there isn't as much variety in the geological pictures available on the Web as for astronomy; four, every time you put a picture on FreeRepublic from a different site it takes up quite a bit of bandwidth and I don't want to do that consistently.
But thanks for asking. This last picture generated some nice response.

This is the only picture that provides some sense of scale for this collection of images.
